Dirty / Grainy Scanned Documents

In Adobe Photoshop CS6 13.0, how can I make the whites whiter and the blacks blacker? I noticed that every document I scan to my PC has that dirty / grainy look to it. It's not caused by a dirty scanner bed but by the printer's software settings. I've had this Ricoh Aficio SP printer for years and I have yet to find the cause. I just need to make regular text documents look their best. How is this done in Adobe Photoshop CS6 13.0?

It's just text. Thanks for the speedy reply. You've pretty much answered my question.
