Do I have to click in the Photoshop window to use shortcuts?

Quick photoshop question for those on a Mac. An update or two ago it started forcing me to click into the Photoshop window in order to start using keyboard shortcuts. For example, if I Command + Tab from Lightroom to Photoshop, I then have to click into the Photoshop window in order to use J or Command+S, even though Photoshop is the active window. Is there a setting I can change to make it so I dont have to click into the window?

Sometimes the cursor gets focused elsewhere. You could try hitting the ESC key when that happens.
