Do ou need a PhD to understand Photoshop ?

New Here ,
May 29, 2017 May 29, 2017

Purchased Photoshop for a year, now two months in and accomplished zilch. Between Paint, MS Word and Powerpoint I can accomplish more with my time instead of sitting in front of Photoshop for 6 hours and accomplishing NOTHING. I unfortunatly signed up for a year, what a mistake and regret as I am retired and pay dearly due to the value of the South African Rand versus the US $.

Peter, I have found that some people benefit substantially from videos and others learn more from steps-by-step printed instructions alongside illustrations. If you fall into the latter category, you may want to consider books by Scott Kelby. His style is a bit sophomoric now and then but aside from that his books are first rate. I suggest you thumb through a few at your local book store and judge for yourself if they will help introduce you to the how-to of Photoshop.

To add to Norman's advice, have a look at the online video tutorials from Lynda.com and PluralSite.com. You can get a 10-day free trial with each of them to see if you find them useful. You can also, of course, ask specific questions on this friendly forum.

If you try and learn it all in one go then you will probably tie yourself in knots. I've been taking photographs for nearly 50 years and using Photoshop for 17 years and I still learn new things almost every day.

The trick is to set yourself small achievable projects - for example: a drawing or painting, adjusting an image, replacing a sky, making a 3D object ............etc      Look up and find a tutorial covering what you need to achieve that specific goal.

I would second the Lynda.com tutorials some of them really are good and they are split into bite-sized chunks. Keep a pen and notebook handy as you do them and write down any tricks/shortcuts/"how tos" so you can refer back later.

If you get stuck come to this forum with the specific part you are stuck with - the more specific your questions the more likely you will get good and useful answers.

Good luck

Dave
