Editing a smart object while 'in position' on the main canvas ??

I placed some textured JPEGs into my PSD. They automatically get converted to smart objects.

Once i've moved them around, coloured and scaled them on the main canvas. I notice something that I need to clone in the jpeg.

I double click the smart object, it opens up the original jpeg in it's original orientation and original colour. It's impossible for me to find the bit I want to clone. How to acheive this?

A smart object is just a container for the original image and does not include changes you make on layers in the new file. If you want to clone in your layers, you need to clone in your layers, not the SO.
