Extreme lag after new update to PS 2022

It seems after the new update to 2022 my program is running annoyingly slow. My computer is more than capable of handeling large file sizes. Program load times have increased, and now my files are taking more than 10 seconds to load. When I plant a pen point to make a shape I have to wait forever until I can plant a new one. Is this a new issues, should I roll back PS to an earlier version?

Ive also noticed a flashing happening in my top bar and tool windows. When I preform an action such as making a gradient or changing a layer property it will lag and flicker, once I pull my mouse to the bottom windows menu bar where the program icons are, the process completes. Its very frustrating.

There are a few suggestions in this thread, notably disabling native canvas, disabling g-sync, and assigning PS as a  "high performance" desktop app in your graphics settings.  None of them bring performance to v21.x levels for me, but they do at least make the software usable, albeit with headaches.

Hi, could you please post the contents of Photoshop's Help>System Info... menu, so that we get to know your OS, its version, the exact version of Photoshop you are running, the date of the GPU driver, etc.

Did you try to reset Photoshop's preferences ?

See: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

Hi, I rolled back my version of Photoshop in hopes this would correct this issue, but I am still experiencing them. So it must be a driver issue. I am going to update my GPU driver to the current one NVIDIA offers and see if this corrects it.

no reason that you should have to post all this info for a basic solution to an obvious problem with the software

I do not have a g-sync compatible monitor, I did however roll back my PS version to 22.4.3 and that resolved the issue. So whatever the adobe programmers changed from that version that causes this needs to be tracked down and remedied, I'm seeing a host of problems on this forum related to flickering and lag in this update.

Whilst turning off the rulers (?!) helped with cursor performance, the
UI is still lagging and flickering to an unacceptable degree. Thanks for
the recommendation on 22.4.3, I'll install that and get back to work.

Hi, I would try to check "Deactivate Native Canvas" in the menu Edit/Preferences/Technology preview (Pc) or Photoshop/Preferences/Technology preview (Mac), then restart Photoshop.
This is not a fix, but rather a way to check if the issue appears only with the new technology, and should be reported to the Ps team.

"Deactivate Native Canvas" returned the Info panel readout updates to realtime in all scenarios (With and without rulers).  CPU utilisation did not rise above 2% whilst moving the cursor, even with Rulers enabled.

It doesn't affect the grating lag with the File-Edit...Help menu, which is still failing to render half the time and laggy the rest, but at least the canvas area works.  Adobe Care on Twitter were running through the usual moebius loop of resetting preferences and reinstalling Photoshop on that particular issue. If there's a "Deactivate Native Menus" tickbox you can surface, that'd be sweet!

I've been saying that "Use Legacy" is the best feature in each release of Photoshop for some time now (*). It's regrettably a rule that's holding firm 😞

* Except for Content Aware Fill. Whichever engineers you have on that need pay rises.

(For clarification on the lag now experienced only with the menus, the lag was introduced with 23.x and was not present in any prior version)

@J453 @Mohit Goyal did you see the info referencing the info panel and native canvas?

@Denyerpro there is a 23.1 update, uncheck native, and run the update to check if you were hit by one of the fixed issues.

Thanks @PECourtejoie , I've applied the 23.1 update:

- With native canvas ENABLED, native rulers ENABLED: CPU 10% simply moving the cursor. Info panel lagged. Performance pretty awful. Menus still glitchy and laggy.

- With native canvas ENABLED, native rulers DISABLED: CPU 10% simply  moving the cursor. Info panel lagged. Performance pretty awful. Menus still glitchy and laggy.

- With native canvas DISABLED, performance is improved, but is still inferior to 22.5.4 in all metrics.

Are you able to offer any insight into why the canvas engine is being overhauled? Fortunately CC allows differing versions installed simultaneously - I'll be sitting on CS6 / CC22.5.4 until the next patch and comparing performance to these two versions.

Photoshop's GPU acceleration was build on OpenGL and OpenCL two cross platform languages that are now depreciated by the Operating System manufacturers...

Those functions need to be rewritten in DirectX and Metal (respectfully for Win and Mac)

There might also be a rewriting of older code to more modern practices.

Thorough the years, Photoshop underwent many similar deep changes: Originally coded for Mac Os (non X) then ported to Unix and Windows, then rewritten for PowerPC for the Mac version, then for OSX (Carbon), then on Cocoa, then ported for 64 bits (both OS), for intel on Mac, now for M1 on Mac... And I'm maybe forgetting some deep fondamental changes...

All this on a codebase with millions of lines of code...

Sure seems like you guys spend a lot of time chasing Apple's tail. Photoshop 5 still works just fine here on my Windows machine 😉

Just noting here after attempting to do some work (And reverting back to CS6 in order to do so) that any sliders and handles are unusably laggy even with the native canvas disabled. (Effect layers, curves, layer opacity, etc) I used to be able to see curves changes in realtime, now if I move a handle I have to wait a second or to. This has been an issue for some time in PS CC, and really makes life uncomfortable. Drag, wait. Drag, wait. Drag, wait. Drag, wait.

Any updates for us @PECourtejoie ?
I'm currently rolled back to 22.x because no combination of Native Canvas on/off or rulers, or Performance settings give me anything usable.  If I'm zoomed in above 50% everything is hopelessly laggy and won't update in anything near realtime, making work impossible. If I zoom out to 50%, everything works buttery smooth - Not sure if that's a datapoint that you could forward to an engineering team?
Suspect it's something to do with the fact that at 50% you're operating on an 8-bit proxy rather than the 16-bit original.

Worth noting that 21.x has no such problems with 100% zoom and adjustment layer sliders not being responsive.

When Adobe release 23 and using 21 becomes impossible, does everyone just have to migrate to Affinity?
