Hello - To clarify, attached is an example file that says it is 14 MB everywhere except in Photoshop.

On the hard drive it reads as 14 MB, but when opened it says 731 KB.

All of the photos are doing this.

Is this some protection from a photographer or something?

No, there is no such protection. This sounds like Photoshop somehow opens a preview, not the original file. Are these Dropbox files perhaps online only? The current version of Dropbox on MacOS Monterey has a problem with these kind of files. Third party apps cannot directly open them. Only the Finder can. If that is indeed the problem then right-click on the file in the Finder and select to download a local copy.

No, the files have been emailed around and the files on hard drive show having all the data.

Every time the files are uploaded or downloaded it always says fully 14 MB or so, but when open in Photoshop, its the preview type file.

First you say Dropbox, now you say email. You normally can't send a 14MB file by email, so please explain in more detail how they are 'emailed around'. Also 14MB is pretty large for a jpeg file, so check they really are jpeg, not something else.

Yes, you can send up to 25 MB files commonly.

I have sent these to my home to open them on a different system to see if same problem occurred.

I also had the client add them to their dropbox and got same problem.

So, yes, these had been emailed and transferred via dropbox.

Can you provide a Dropbox link so we can examine this?

FWIW, documents size outside PS (the Finder) and what PS reported are often different but not to the degree you are reporting. As such, getting a copy of the JPEG to examine would be useful

It could be excessive metadata.

No, I do not see enough reason to expose our dropbox or additional employee photos.

I just need to know if this problem can be eliminated or if have to bother the client for different files.

Thanks

Well, it isn't easy to help you fix a problem without having the necessary data, but if you can't, you can't.

Good luck.

In your folder file is 14Mb and what dimensions? Photoshop will not crop on its own. There is one option in Photoshop that can trigger script or action on event Open Document. For now, use Bridge to confirm dimensions and size or use built in options (that I am not aware because I am lifetime Win user). In Bridge select file then look at Metadata panel for info.

Using ExifTool to remove all metadata, produces a ~25KB file, 408x612 pixels in dimension.

Same result with the ExifTool command to "regenerate" the JPEG metadata, rather than remove it, ExifTool reports:

Deleting unknown trailer (14376583 bytes)

So, the creator of these JPEG files has not sent the original high-resolution files, they have somehow sent massively inflated thumbnails that contain what appears to be incorrectly formed/saved metadata.

Photoshop NOWHERE shows file size once a document is opened. So you are probably looking at some other figure, like memory needed and assuming it will be file size. Many people make this mistake.

It actually does in multiple places, here are just two:

Info Palette and Doc infoInfo Palette and Doc info

But like the OP, what the finder tells Photoshop and us can differ hugely:

FinderFinder

Author “Color Management for Photographers" & "Photoshop CC Color Management/pluralsight"
