Fill path only works on a solid background, not transparent?

I'm new to using paths and the pen tool, can somebody explain to me how I can fill a path with a pattern on a new transparent layer, rather than a solid background? This is my problem. Thank you!

Look in the Paths panel menu for Fill Path. This brings up a dialog like this:

Be sure Preserve Transparency is not checked.
