Since the new update, when I go to filter and lighting effects, you no longer see any options to move or change the lighting direction or size for the point lights. WHat happened?
GPU functions are changing in Photoshop. 3d and Render Lighting Effects, which is based on the same 3D engine, still use the Open GL GPU functions. So to use them you will need to go to Preferences >Technology Previews and check "Deactivate Native Canvas". Then close and restart Photoshop.

I should have posted. I read your reply to someone else about this same issue and made the change. Thank you.

Thanks @davescm ,
Unchecked that dialog box, but seems like the same issue still exists. Would disabling it not permit it to function at all? Either way, it's still not active.

Did you restart Photoshop after checking it? (Note that is checking Deactivate Native Canvas not unchecking it)

"Deactivate Native Canvas" did NOT work. Instructions followed precisely. Multiple program restarts AND reboots as well. Only reverting to 22.2 put me back in business. The computer is less than a year old.

I've had continual problems since 22.4.0 and 22.4.1, and every recommendation has been an iteration of "turn off <an item> in Preferences" and restart. Yesterday, my Lighting Effects worked. Today, they don't. It shows as available under Filters, but when you use it, there are no handles, tools, nothing. And last night, files opened this way, like a CAPTCHA puzzle pic:
I've tried all the suggestions several times. I've repeatedly restarted Photoshop, I've logged out, I've even restarted my maxed-out MacBook Pro 2020. Nothing works. At this point, to finish some work I started last week, I'll have to turn off auto updates and try reverting to an older version that worked. I have no idea what else to try.

Had the same two problems! Lighting Effects greyed out no matter whate graphics settings and having that Technology Previews checked as well as the weird "puzzle" look when opening a PSD with multiple layers and smart objects. I've reinstalled twice. I've also once got the Lighting Effects to show after resetting Preferences. But then the same problem returned after modifying some preferences (not related to the Lighting Effects issue).

Same problem. If I click deactivate, Lighting Effects are grayed out. And if I don't deactivate I, too, get crazy screens. Sigh, once again I have to go back to an earlier version.
Why are we paying subscription fees when the newer versions are unusable?!

Up until yesterday installing PS 22.4.2 corrected the problem -- and it seemed to be permanent. Sadly, after returning to my iMac I saw that the application, in fact, the whole system had apparently crashed! There was an error message about the CC app having some issue. So, allowed the update to the CC App. However, after updating that app and opening PS, things were back to "normal" malfunctioning!! -- images opened with tile effect, lighting effects greyed out -- whether or not the Deactivate Native Canvas was checked or not. In fact, if unchecked, Lighting Effects was available, but completely useless --just a splotch of black, no handles, etc. Then, shortly PS crashed!!! Attaching first part of log file here:

I've posted on this issue with repeated and detailed reports. The only success I've had is reverting to 22.2 where Render > Lighting Effects works. I saw the 22.4.2 "Update Available" and almost installed it. I'm sorry for your troubles, but you saved me from wasting more time.
A friend who works with a well-known digital-media publishing company tipped me off to the 22.2 solution. His entire company reverted to 22.2 and won't update Photoshop because of this issue.
This reminds me of an unintentionally funny 1970s Ford Thunderbird recall letter. It advised that the rear transaxle could separate if you drive the car. Note the wording, "if you drive the car." And why did Ford think someone would buy a car? Godfrey Daniels!
It also reminds me of an old radio-comedy bit we did back in the '80s, with Soviet Network News correspondent Biff Stroganoff, reporting from Chernobyl: [heavy cartoon Russian accent] "Everything is fine here, especially near the power plant. Back to you."
I await an Adobe fix, but with dwindling hope.

I have also reported this issue several times lighting filters have not worked for me since 22.2 and still don't and I am not on a Mac, I am on a PC with a more than adequate vid card and 32 megs of added RAM. So yup once again I am back to version 22.2 which takes away my ability to use some of the new features in Photoshop.

So are others having the same problem @marzo19 is having: when using ver 22.4.2, lighting effects are initially restored but then the system crashes and they no longer work?
Copy link to clipboard

I won't try to duplicate @marzo19's 22.4.2 crash, I need to work. That Lighting Effects remains broken is a critical problem. I'm no longer experimenting with new releases, Adobe should be doing that with their own employees' computers. Do "in-house field tests" on many of those computers before asking users to be a laboratory. I used to enjoy being a pioneer on new releases, but I'm joining the settlers. Let somebody else get shot full of arrows first, it's happening over and over with these Photoshop updates.

Thanks. Yes, I saw that after doing the latest PS update and shared the info with others on other similar conversations. Of course, the alternative (other than workarounds with layers, gradient maps, etc., provided by many YouTube PS experts) is the expensive Substance option (at $39.99/month). Also, Adobe will discontinue the 22.2 version in two years in August.
