Frequent crashes, photoshoot, selection box appearing, then application freezing.

The application crashes when I attempt to draw using Photoshop. I'm not sure what the cause is except that a selection box appears on screen before it locks up and shuts down by the task manager. It usually occurs during brushstrokes or undos

What have you done for all-purpose trouble-shooting so far? 

Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:
