Gifs don't save in full color

Just spent a few hours on an animated gif in photoshop. However, when I go to export it comes out extremely grainy and overall ruins the gif. Any clue how to allow more than 256 colors? I'm messing around with all the other settings but none seem to work. I'd love for it to save how it actually looks in the timeline.

256 is the limit of the (very old) GIF format.

Although you can improve the color table used by trying other color optimization routines: e.g. Adaptive

You can play with toggling Dither on and off as well, and see what works best for you.
