Testing my layer styles, why it doesn't work?

It looks like you may have all layer effects hidden.

If so, go to Layer - Layer Style - Show All Effects

Yes it was hidden, why that happen I don't know. I hope it's not default setting for Photoshop.

The only way it will happen is if you hold down the Alt key while clicking on the "eyeball" on a selected layer. That action will untick the eyeballs off the the other layers hiding them.

It's a handy shortcut if for some reason you want to see only one layer for editing.

Alt-click that same eyeball to bring them all back.

I've never seen that grey out all the effects on the selected layer though, as per the OP screenshot.

Alt+ LYH does it, but it's hard to see anyone typing that by accident

Well, I won't delve into that further using OSX.

Alt + L sounds like the shortcut for the Windows Layer menu, but what does Y and H mean?

I'd forgotten about MACs

On Windows Alt+LYH hides or shows all layer effects

Layer > Layer Style > Hide all Effects

Layer > Layer Style > Show all Effects

Well Dave, it doesn't look like the Mac menu bar has that equivalent behavior. Even when the Layers menu is open, Y and H act differently.

There's always custom shortcuts if the command is used enough.

It may be a Windows thing. On Windows the Alt key activates the Underscored character short in Menu

So what Dave is showing is four Shortcuts.

Alt Activate Underscore menu character shortcut keys no need to hold it down

L activate Layer Menu

Y activate Layer Style Menu

H Hide style effects

Thanks JJ. There is an old discussion to get the Mac menu to do the same thing:

shortcut keys to menu bar?  But there are no "underscore" shortcuts on the OSX side.

So the conclusion is that if you like Windows menu shortcuts, use Windows.
