P: Preset Syncing - Recursive Multiple Copies Created

1. Photoshop 23.0.1 (bug has been present in all versions since this feature was released)

2. MacOS - Monterey (bug has been present in all previous versions of MacOS since feature released)

A. Turn on Preset Syncing in Preference Panel

B. Expected Result - Presets to sync to Creative Cloud

C. Actual - Presets for ALL tools are duplicated recursively in folders, endlessly

Only way to stop this is to turn off Preset Syncing
Each new Photoshop version seems to come with Preset Syncing turned on be default, which starts the problem all over again.

This was discussed in this feedback item, which has not been responded to since August:

To further emphasize this problem being widespread, even Chief Evalgelist Paul Trani was experiencing it live as he was leading Photoshop creative challenges this week - in the video you can see him quickly deleting these duplicate preset groups as he does the demo, across multiple tools, so it's affecting him as well.

Here's that video so you can see - note at this timecode he has this same problem, and then he deletes the redundant group (7:20)

Is this problem publicly ackowledged and can it be fixed so that we are not constantly cleaning up duplicate presets and possibly losing valuable work in the process?

I have ticked the preference to allow Preset Syncing in PHotoshop but have found it keeps creating multiple copies of shapes, brushes, gradients etc etc. Example attached for reference. How do I fix/stop this?

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear this is happening when Preset Sync is ON. I'd like to ask a few questions to troubleshoot the problem.

Can you please provide a copy of System Info file? This can be obtained from Help > System Info.
Can you let me know the version number of the following components in the Creative Cloud app, Core Sync and CC Library? To obtain this information
1. Launch Creative Cloud App
2. Go to Creative Could > About Creative Cloud. You may need to scroll all the way to the bottom to see CC Library
How many devices is Photoshop being used from and is Preset Sync ON on each one?

It is currently only turned on on ONE device. My intention is to have it on 2 but when I saw that it was duplicating I have waited before switching on on the 2nd device.

The screenshot below shows that it is contiuing to duplicate more. It now has a 504 entry???? and PS is reporting that gradients, shapes, brushes etc are now maxxed out.

Hi! first time opening Photoshop it showed an error message regarding to be unable to load all the gradient presets becouse of the maximum limit of gradient presets has been reached. Actually I find a large mount of presets folder in gradients and brushes. I found 24 gradient presets folders. All the folders contain regular gradients categories exept one of them where I found 20 more nested folder. I suppose it affects all presets in photoshop. How can I fix it? thanks a lot. I am also having issues with the presets and getting messages about too many swatches and presets can't be synced (or there's an issue with syncing presets). I reinstalled the previous version and will have to old off on the exciting new features. Lesson learned about having previous versions of Ps removed from my pc.

It looks like something is going wrong with Preset Syncing on your machine. Unless you need your presets synced across multiple machines, I recommend disabling preset sync for now. You can do this by unchecking the Preferences > Preset Syncing checkbox. Then remove the duplicate Gradients and Brushes preset folders.

Thank you @Matt Fuerch , I disabled preset synching and I haven't gotten a pop up yet, and everything else seems to be working properly. But let me ask, if I should want to set up Ps on another desktop then what would happen with my presets? I'm not going to do this any time soon, but we never know. 🙂

Hello,

Regarding disabling Preset Sync, there should have been a dialog popup when clicking OK on the Preference window after unchecking Preset Syncing. The prompt asked to keep the presets in the cloud or delete them from the cloud.

Can you please let me know what option did you chose?

As Claudia mentions, it depends on whether you selected to Keep or Remove your synced presets in the cloud.

If you chose to Remove them, then you should be able to enable Preset Syncing in the future, which will upload your presets so that they will be accessible from a new machine.
If you chose to Keep them, then they will all try to sync back down to your machine when you enable Preset Syncing in the future (and I don't think you want this). In this case, Claudia and I can work through a few steps with you to prevent this from happening (let us know!).

In the meantime, we'll work to fix the bug that you seem to have hit, and prevent this unwanted behavior in the first place.

They are likely duplicates, so in your case you could choose to keep either the foldered or non-foldered presets.

I have the exact same problem, and it has persisted from upgrade to upgrade.

When I turn on preset syncing, it creates multiple copies with my computer name and the extensions as mentioned above - eg ".localdomain" , "localdomain2" , "localdomain3" across all tools - they just keep replicating.

The only solution I have found is to turn off preset syncing altogether.

It seems that the sync is unaware of current presets and duplicating them.

Is there a fix for this on the horizon?

To answer your questions, I am attaching my Adobe Creative Cloud version information. I just did a complete re-install on my system (MacOS Monterey) of all Creative Cloud apps, so this is the most up to date one. Thank you for any guidance!

The benefit of having Preset Sync ON is your presets live on the cloud and are available for all the desktop devices that have Preset Sync ON. When Photoshop is shut down, a copy of the latest state of the presets is saved locally to the Settings folder.

A scenario where a folder with your computer's name is created with a copy of the presets may have been more common in the initial phases of this feature.

With the recent upgrades, this scenario would happen when preset sync is turned OFF on a desktop, user chooses to keep the presets in the cloud when turning it OFF, and changes are made to the preset panels (Swatches, Gradients, Patterns, Brushes, Shapes, Styles) before Preset Sync is turned ON again.

When turning Preset Sync ON again, Presets in the cloud are downloaded to the panels and a folder is created with the intention of preserving a copy of your local presets and give you the option to reconcile them.

What you want to do is delete the duplicated folders and allow this action to sync across all the desktops where Preset Sync has been turned ON. If you only use one desktop, allow time for folders and presets to be deleted from the cloud.

To check is Preset Syncing is done, open the Creative Cloud Desktop app, click on the Cloud Icon (top right corner) and observe the Libraries Syncing status. When libraries are syncing, the progress will show as 'Libraries: xx%'.

I have done this in the past:
- a. Turned off syncing
- b. Hit YES to leave in the cloud
- c. Turn it back on
- - And the problem recurred
This time, I have turned off syncing, and hit "NO" to save in the Cloud

Are you telling us that if we turn syncing back on we will not have duplication of folders?

I am reluctant to do this without more information from you as I seem to lose changes to my settings when this happens.

I should add...

Previously when settings sync was ON, I did exactly as you said (and as Paul Trani did on his live broadcasts) and deleted the redundant folders, and then allowing them to sync. They just came back recursively, so the removal in Photoshop didn't seem to remove them from the cloud.

Preset Sync is a feature that is meant to be left ON once it's turned ON. It will sync any changes to the cloud and sync them down to other desktop that have Preset Sync turned ON.

If you turn Preset Sync ON after having turned it OFF and chosen to removed presets from the cloud, these folders should not be created.

The feature has evolved and the folder with local presets used to get created more frequently however, and unless there is something else happening, that should not be the case.

There is an open issue we are investigating that could cause a folder with local presets to be created, an error comes up saying that Something went wrong and asks to restart Ps. This is more frequent in Windows.

I did as you said, and when I turned Preset Sync ON, I got this error in library syncing

This is interesting because right after the Photoshop 23.0.1 upgrade, I started getting the above error, which coincided with Preset syncing being turned ON by default with the new installation. I went through a few steps with Adobe Support and managed to make this go away, but now I think this error went away when I turned Preset Syncing OFF.

To test this, I then turned Preset Sync OFF, the libraries synced again (quickly rather than slowly this time), and now libraries sync without an error:

To me this looks like Preset syncing is causing a problem overall - can you please continue investigating? I will note that when sync was turned on (with the error above), the folders did not duplicate.

Right now:

1. Preset syncing is OFF

2. Presets are NOT saved in the Cloud

As I mentioned previously, this is challenging/frustrating to diagnose because unlike other assets like files and library items, there's nowhere to look in Creative Cloud to see where presets are sync'd and if there is a problem with them. They are synced with "libraries" which isn't actually what they are, correct?
