Hands-on tutorial not working in photoshop 2024 on macbook.

I'm following this tutorial: 'Using a color lookup table to turn day into night.' However, I'm stuck on the step of selecting the background layer to make it active. I've selected it but couldn't continue with next steps. It's kinda upsetting that I'm almost there but unexpectedly stuck due to some bugs.
