You can do this with an Action, or a Script.

Will there be a gap between the images?

Will this always be 2-up horizontal, or will the number of images vary?

This Action presumes a flattened or single-layer original:

Or you can use Smart Object layers, so that updates to the layered original are automatically reflected in the duplicated layer.

There are many possibilities.

Action made with Canvas is Delay. . . Action made with Transform is faster . 

But the transform action doesn't fit every picture.

Since this Action is set to 300 px, it matches only the 300px image.

How should I make this Transform Action fit every image?

My expectation was that the canvas was the same size as the image area, not a small image on a large canvas.

I haven't had time to download your action, if it has recorded explicit px values then it would probably require scripting as actions aren't very flexible when it comes to operations such as transforms. Canvas can work in % and isn't restricted to px values.
