I have had (forever) Adobe Photoshop 4.0 with 5.5 upgrade. It is all I need or want. It has run on my computer fine for over 10 years. Now I have a new computer running on Windows 10, which is a 64 bit system. My Photoshop disks will not load, as they are 32 bit versions. I get a message telling me that I need to contact the software manufacturer to see if they will provide an upgrade version of my Photoshop 4.0/5.5 upgrade that works on a 64 bit system. I have gone to Adobe Photoshop and searched for a free upgrade to make these run, but find nothing. I think Adobe should offer a free upgrade to make these products work on 64 bit system. For example I have a Lexmark printer scanner copier which worked with my 32 bit driver on my old PC. The 32 bit Driver software CD that came with the printer would not work on my new 64 bit system, so I went to Lexmark and was able to download for free a 64 bit driver which works fine on my new pc. So, shouldn't Adobe offer a free download for a 64 bit version of Photoshop 4.0/5.5 upgrade that will run on my 64 bit new computer operating system? I paid for Photoshop, so it should be upgraded so it works on my new PC. Help please.

Owners of old programs simply have problems with Windows 10... none of which is Adobe's fault... Adobe did not change your old program to make it stop working... Microsoft changed their operating system and THAT is why your old program won't work, not because of anything Adobe did... Also... every time Microsoft issues a Win10 update, there is the risk that an old program that HAS been working after the initial Win10 upgrade will STOP working... bottom line, old programs require a matching old operating system
Two ideas that MAY work to install and/or run old programs in Windows 10
-RIGHT click the program icon or EXE and select a compatibility mode in the pop up option window
-or Run as Administrator http://forums.adobe.com/thread/969395 to assign FULL Windows permissions may help... says Encore, but sometimes required for ALL Adobe programs (this is NOT the same as using an Administrator account)
Adobe does NOT go back and upgrade old programs to make them compatible with new operating systems
I have several 32bit programs installed on my Win10 64bit operating system, so I don't understand your problem

The 32bit Photoshop and 64bit Photoshop versions are different installs. A 32bit install would not be updated or upgraded to a 64bit install. You should try Installing CS4 and CS5 to see if you get the option to install one or the other or both. The CS4 and CS5 installers should be able to install both the 32bit and 64bit versions of Photoshop. ON my machine I have 32bit and 64bit versions installed for CS6 and CC. CS2 and CS3 are 32bit only and I have just install the 64bit versions of CC 2014, CC 2015, CC 2015.5 and CC 2017. CC2014 is the version of Photoshop I use by default. If you install media will not install try downloadinf CS4 and CS5 fron Adobe site.

JJMack,
Thanks for your reply, but it may have gone over my head. When you say I should try Installing CS4 and CS5 to see if I get the option to install one or the other or both, are you saying I should buy these??? My point is I have 4.0/5.5 upgrade and think as they will not run on my new 64 bit system, Adobe should provide a free replacement. I do not want better newer versions of Photos hop for free, just the same version/content but able to install and run on 64 bit system. I use Photoshop once in a blue moon. Will not pay for 64 bit install version. Is it free?

JKMack, I really do not know what you are talking about when you say "The CS4 and CS5 installers should be able to install both the 32bit and 64bit versions of Photoshop." I thought my version of Photoshop being 32 bit would not run on a 64 bit system. It is true it would not install, but I thought it was because it was a 32 bit version. What us CS4 and CS5. I Googled prices and have found Adobe CS5 for Windows from $16.95 to $1554.95!!!! Do I use my Adobe Photoshop 4.0 with 5.5 upgrade with CS4 and CS5? I clearly do not understand what you are advising.

Hi Johnathon
You mention your Photoshop being ten years old, so do you mean CS4, which was released in 2008?
Adobe Photoshop version history - Wikipedia
If so, then I would think it would work on a 64 bit system.
You can download the install files from here:

Don't forget to deactivate Photoshop on your old computer.

Did I say that? Guess I was just thinking of how long I had my previous computer. But actually I forgot I had the software on the PC before that. I got it around 2000, I guess. At any rate it is version 4.0 with 5.5 upgrade.

You should be able to download the versions of photoshop you have serial numbers for and install them on your new machine using your serial numbers

Hi JJMack
Can you still download Photoshop 5.5 ? If so , is installation based on the original installers from the disks which AFAIK were 16 bit?

Haven't tried to dowload 5.5 again, as I have it on disc. AFAIK installation is based on the original installers from the disc., which may be 16 bit? I don't really know. I do know it won't install on my new 64 bit PC.

That is correct. And I thank you all for your help, answers, suggestions, and information. But I fear I have put you all to too much effort for my little problem of wanting to use my 4.0/5.5 version forever. Hoped to, but may have to just give it up and get past it. Just that I don't need and can't justify paying for the latest greatest versions of CS (fka, Photoshop).

I think any version of Photoshop prior to Photoshop CS3 is really not worth having. I do have CS2 installed for I made some scripts available for CS2. I keep CS2 in case I need to help someone using my scripts like Photo Collage Kit works in CS2 and newer. Adobe did breake some on my other scripts in CC 2015.5 and CC 2017. Adobe added an intentional bug into their ScriptingSupport plug-in.
IMO the OP would be better off getting Photoshop Elements. It is like $60 on Amazon and for $90 thy can get Premier Element thrown in.

??? I have the versions of the software that I have serial numbers for on discs. Problem is they are 32 bit programs and will not install or run (as far as I know) on my 64 bit system.

Disregard my previous ignorant replies. I was looking at various books on CS5. I now realize it is just a changed name for Photoshop software and cost from $500 to over $1500. Sorry, I don't need Photoshop that bad. Use it once or twice a year, just to touch up an old photo, or something. I will through out my old Photoshop 4.0/5.5 CDs and forget about it. Thanks for answering.

You can't buy CS4 or CS5 or CS6 any more. They are obsolete too. And won't be updated for new systems either. That only happens for people who keep paying. The current offering is Photoshop CC2017, available by subscription only, from $10 per month.

Well, as for subscriptions, I won't buy any. Not windows 365 or anything else. If everything is going to be buy subscription, I will stop computing and enjoy life. That us like car dealerships refusing to sell your a car and only allowing you to rent the car. Government should pass a law making it illegal to only rent offer software for rent. At $10/month the version 4.0/5.5 that I had for almost 20 years would have cost me $2400. And I used it just a few times per year, if that. Ridiculous.

Photoshop 5.5 (not CS5) came out in 1999 and was designed to run on the hardware and operating systems of that time.
If you choose to freeze your software in time then you also need to freeze your hardware in time. I keep an old laptop around just to run a couple of bits of old software occasionally.
If you don't want to use subscription software, Adobe do sell Photoshop Elements on a perpetual license which may suit your occasional use.

Thanks for the information. I didn't realize that my Photoshop software would not install/run on my new PC Op-system until I had junked my old PC. Wish I had realized, as I could have/would have saved it. And, clearly, I am no IT guru, although I have written software executables in FORTRAN and COBOL, and reformatted a hard drive or two from scratch, many years ago. But I don't understand why when uograding operating systems, say from 32 bit to 64, they wouldn't include the ability to run both, so as to accommodate older software.

Hi
It was not the running of the 32 bit software that causes the problems with those very old versions. The installers were originally 16 bit and as far as I know that was the same on Photoshop 5.
Then you have hard disks - Photoshop 7.0 can run but won't recognise disks over 1TB. They simply did not exist on PCs at the time that software was introduced.
Having said all that - there are some ingenious users that have got very old versions to run.
You may want to take a look here:

Given your sporadic use of such software, it seems that Photoshop may not be necessary for your needs, and exploring alternatives could be beneficial.
GIMP, a totally free option, along with Krita – another free tool that leans more towards digital art rather than photo editing – could fit your requirements adequately.
Affinity, while not free, is very competitively priced. Many users actually find it more appealing than Photoshop.

I'm surprised nobody has corrected that. 64 bit systems include support for 32 bit apps. Your information is wrong. However, apps as old as that may have many other issues, because Windows changes in other ways. Photoshop 4.0 was actually released 21 years ago, a true eternity in computing terms.

Thanks for the comment. "My information" was just my misunderstanding. When I couldn't install the 32 bit software on my 64 bit Windows 10 system, and when my system came back with a message telling me that the software was not compatable with my 64 bit system, as I knew the software ran on my old 32 bit system, I presumed the 64 bit system would not run 32 bit software. My bad. Now, if I can just find a way to install it.
