Help with keyboard shortcuts not working for Photoshop 23.4

I would love some advice.  I'm an illustrator.  I'm often using the keyboard shortcuts; B for brush, P for pen etc.  Suddenly they're not "sticking".  I hit B and it quickly reverts back to the previous tool selected.  I need to now choose the tool from the panel on the left each time but it's taking twice as long. Could this be a keyboard probem?  My keyboard and Mac are all new, only a few months old.

What is the Photoshop > Prefereces > Tools > Spring-loaded Tool Shortcuts-setting?

It's checked and says timing sensitivity 200 miliseconds.  Here's a picture

Have you considered unchecking it altogether?

No but I'm not very savvy at this.  Won't unchecking it mean I will not be able to use those shortcuts? Is that what you think I should try, unchecking springloaded shortcuts- will the shortcuts still be able to be used?

Why ask and not simply try? 

Edit: If it has no effect on the issue you can always set it back.

Well I didn't do it just yet since I'm working on something I need to get in today and I'll admit to being a bit hesitant to play around with settings without my son around. H can help me out of a jam if needed.  I'm easily confused:D  But I do plan to do it later!
