I can't afford CC or CS6. Is there a humoungous difference between CS4 and CS6 ?
I can afford a used copy of CS4. Many thanks for any guidance.
I ask because I am a PS newbie and would like to follow tutorials for learning. Would CS4 have most of the tools used in tutorials?
Thanks,

Hi
Adobe don't sell perpetual licenses for older versions of Photoshop anymore and buying a used version comes with some risk, you need to make sure that the person selling it has a genuine license and they will need to transfer it to you, more info
Transfer an Adobe product license
Also don't be fooled by cheap versions on the internet

A lot has changed since CS4 so most of the up to date tutorials will not be applicable to CS4, although you can search Youtube for tutorials applicable to that version

If you can't afford it, you might not want to take the risk of buying a bootleg copy and loosing your money.

Buying a "used copy" of Photoshop sounds fishy.. You may be in for more trouble than you bargained for.
I would recommend that you buy a legitimate copy of modesty priced Photoshop Elements instead where useful tutorials abound. It's a great way to start.

New not used?
If it hasn't been registered with Adobe and you're 100% sure it's genuine then you should be fine, make sure to register it with your Adobe account

Another thing to remember Photoshop CS4 may not work on modern operating systems and you may run into trouble installing/running it

If you're being offered it by a human you trust, you lose compatibility with modern operating systems, so you need to get a system running an old system.
If you're being offered it by an ever so nice and convincing company, you run the major risk of it's being a pirate copy. As such you not only give up legality, you also gain malware, and so you can expect to lose your privacy, credit cards or worse.

Also, did you know Photoshop CC is $10 per month?
And any CS6 you are offered is every bit as old and questionable as CS4... Adobe stopped making these old products as soon as they released an upgrade.

I have CS5 and it works perfecltly fine on my new PC using Windows 10. I also have a subscriptrion to CC at work and I still find CS5 is just as good today aside from a few extra missing features like Sky replacement, and 3D syttuff that I never use. For practyacally all other Photo editing and text, CS5 works just fine in 2022. Do not be fooled by prople who do not have the facts straight.. CS4 who klnows, but CS5 is just fine.

CS5 may or may not work on all modern systems. The next OS update could topple the applecart. No one can predict when Adobe will end CS5 permanently or how long your system can support it. That's the risk you take with unsupported software. Best advice, have a backup plan ready.
MODERN OPTIONS:
Photoshop Elements (approx $100, no subscription needed).

Creative Cloud Photography Plan (approx $10/month for 12 months). Includes the following:

Color me very skeptical. Adobe pulled Creative Suite off the shelves quite a while ago. You cannot legally purchase a copy from ANY vendor, agent or re-seller in ANY country now. Please don't be hoodwinked into believing something that's probably not true. Some people will say anything to sell you cracked software that could potentially harm your computer or worse, steal your identity. At least if it's used software you can check the serial number with Adobe beforehand to ensure it's genuine.
That said, CS4 is not certified to work on the newest operating systems. That's a major obstacle.
I think norman.sanders advice to buy Photoshop Elements for $100 is the best suggestion so far. And it's certainly the safest.

Bootleg copies can look like they are brand new. Again, I would be very leery of such an offer.

This is an awesome list, but even so — the ones in CC2019 are giving me pause and making me chuckle.

Yes, it's definitely a 'warts and all' list, and does not all read so well. It was also one of those things I started, and wished I hadn't. They just kept coming and coming!

Old perpetual Photoshop versions have no Adobe support except for installation problems for the OS they are designed for old versions are also Platform dependant. They run on Windows or Mac OS not on either the code is not the same one both systems. Make sure you get the version for your Platform. Also if you are using a MAC apple will stop supporting old 32 bit applications in up coming version of Mac OS. You need to get CS5 or CS6 older version for sure will not run on Macs in next release of Mac OS. Apple new mobile IOS versions also do not support old 32 bit Apps. To use old Application and Apps you may need to run oldx Operating system versions.

Mangurian, I'm a certified/licensed Web Designer so I do have a need to use PhotoShop, I have been using CS4 for close to 10 years now. I researched the CS6 & CC upgrades and although there are some new great features... in my opinion...not worth the cost. I can still do 95% of both what the newer versions can do, but may just take more steps.
Use CS4 & Spend about $10 on Amazon and buy the CS4 Classroom book...
even after 10 years I still go back & refer to it as needed. Great Tutorials on a CD included in the book... No Need to rely on Adobe online things... Hope this helps... PMF Web Design

patruns98 You need to qualify your answers. The OP has not yet answered the questions John asked in post #9
What hardware?
What operating system?
If it was a brand new Mac with Mojave, would it support CS4?
CS4 came in 32bit and 64bit installations. Any issues there?
Without knowing the specifics, no one can provide a meaningful answer.
I still doubt this is legit software, which might mean all sort of issues, and certainly no support when it goes pear shaped.

If you can get an older CS version that you know is legal and functional, go ahead and do so. You will save in the long term.
Be aware though, that if you need them some newer functions may not be included in different apps. Illustrator, and InDesign comes to mind where files created in newer versions may not even open in the older apps.
