Is there a way to check the scaling of an image? I want to make sure it's proportional, not stretched out. Thank you

If you have width and height link to do a constrained resize.  When not linked image size can change the image's aspect ratio distorting the image when resample is checked.

When resample is not checked only  the print size can be changed the image's aspect ratio and pixels will remain unchanged.  Resample checked create a new image with new computer generated pixels.

If you start out with say a 6000 x 4000 pixel image, go to Image > Image size, and enter 6000 pixels for width.

If the proportions haven't changed, the the height will read 4000.

Click Cancel to leave the dialog.

Yes, I agree with Per Bernstein, Image size will always reduce or enlarge in proportion automatically when you change the height or width.
