how to exit generative fill

I used generative AL fill to remove background on a graphic I was working on, but I was not able to use other tools properly, such as free transform. I can't find a way to exit generative AL fill so that I can further changes to my graphic without generative AL fill

Has Photoshop locked up completely? 

Can you save the image and restart Photoshop and try again?

Can you describe your system hardware briefly?
