How to hide bridge when opening a file in photoshop on a mac?

Hello,

If I double click a file in bridge, it opens in photoshop.  I can see the file, and the top menu changes to photoshop.  The problem is that the bridge window is still visible and it is blocking the main photoshop window.  So now I have to hide bridge to see the main photoshop window.

This problem only happens when not using tabs in photoshop.  I would prefer not to use tabs.

Is there a way to fix this?

I learned on another forum that holding down option while double clicking a file in bridge will hide bridge and open on photoshop.
