If dragging and dropping is no longer working, use your libraries. Just drop the layer into a library and you can pull it out in Illustrator. I don't have any suggestions to fix the drag and drop issue.

Why drag a Photoshop Layer into Illustrator instead of properly placing an image?

hello. to avoid saveing unneccessary elements/ layers/ to folders. before was much quicker and easier. you just adjust layer and then easily drag to illustrator. now have to adjust it, save it and after that drag it from folder. in need extra space for saveing and also 2 more step in work process.

But the image is embedded so further editing necessitates unembedding and multiple instances are separate.

Naturally this may be of varying (or none at all) consequence depending on one’s usual workflow.
