I cannot create an action to save a JPG copy WITHOUT the action changing the file name.

I have been creating actions to save a copy of a working file as a JPG for a long time and now it doesn't seem to work any more.

Why does the action change the file name to the same name as the image that was used to create the action? I am unable to create an action that just saves a JPG of the current file and keeps the file name of it intact.

I have tried using "Save As" and "Save a copy..." and it just will not work.

When you record the save action do not change the file name.

It will auto save out as jpg with the existing file name.

If your intention is to have PS stop and ask what you want to name the file - do not record the save.

Instead go to the Action drop down menu and Insert Menu Item and select Save As.

This will pause the action to allow you to enter the name then save.

To be clear - this has been the behavior when recording actions for at least since CS3 (2007). I remember having to tell my students the same thing back then.

Oh wow - you're right!

I didn't realize that I was changing the file name while creating the action every time.

Thanks for your help!!

Seems you once understood how it worked, which I feel should be understood intuitively.

You probably had a brain fart... 😉
