I cannot get smooth displacement maps

I'm wondering if there is any way to eliminate the rather noticable jagged edges that are created when I apply a displacement map to a layer? Despite having a really smooth blurred source map I'm getting awful jaggs that will make my image pretty unusable (it's gonna be blown up really big).

Any suggestions or is this just the way it is?

Did you blur the background before applying the map?

Duplicate the layer then run a Gaussian Blur on it.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your reply.

Here is my displacement map (I'm assuming this is what you mean when you say 'background'?) Very soft and blurred.

To be honest I'm kind of suprised how jagged the results are given how smooth the map is.  Searching the net for similar grumbles results in no similar gripes, but I cant believe people are happy with their results, thus this thread and me wondering if something is going wrong somewhere?

The screenshot doesn’t indicate whether it was taken at View > 100%.

Why don’t you post the actual image instead?

What are the Scale settings?

If they are above 100 »artefacts« should naturally not come as a surprise.
