I haven't opened my photoshop 2021 program for months and now I have found that none of my tools

I haven't opened my Photoshop 2021 program for a few months.  When I opened it yesterday to edit a photo I found that none of my tools on the left side are working...clone stamp, band aid, etc.   I was able to make some adjustments with contrast and those types of tools.  Suggestions, anyone.  I am using Windows 10

The tools don't work in what way? They give an error dialog when you try to use them? They give unexpected results? Something else?
