I have an image in photoshop, in the exact dimension and page placement I desire. I want to place another image into that exact spot and size but Place Embedded simply puts it in the middle of my page as another image, even though I had the original image selected. InDesign allows me to select the image, and Place Into. Is there something similar in PS that I am missing?

On the same vein....I have two lots of 8 photos on the page, I have grouped them into two groups of 8. Why does Replac

e Contents  replace all 16 images even though I only selected a single image? Can I selectively replace contents somehow?

If you have no image in your template have just Alpha Channels that Maps to where you want images  placed, sized and shape. A script can automate the Place, Transform, positioning and masking to shape.  Photoshop Supports up to 53 alpha channels so a script would be limited to placing up to 53 Smart object.  Image can be any size for the Transforming and masking will fit in any image. However, for best results image should have an aspect ratio close to that of the Alpha channel that maps an image's location size and shape in the template.  IMO you should only use Smart Object Layers for Images in Mockup templates where your need the image warped, rotated  for the Templates projective composition.  If you are just creating a Collage or a Poster where  the images are straight on, vertical and level using  a smart object layer will require all replacement foe exactly like the template objects. They need to be the correct Aspect ratio, Size and print resolution as the Object used in the templates creation. If you want to use replace content. If they are not correct you need to edit  the templates then edit each Smart object layer object to edit in the replacement image and make it fill the smart object.
