Can anyone please clear me the difference between the inverting a layer mask/image(CTRL + I) and inverting a selection(CTRL + Shift + I)? I'm really confused! means Its clear to me the invert selection, but I don't understand why there's a feature for inverting a layer mask? Can anybody teach me with an example?

A layer mask can reveal or hide content. So inverting the values of a layer mask channel creates the opposite masking effect.

Ctrl+I inverts the colors. If the colors are pure black and pure white, they simply reverse. For your example, try Ctrl+I on an image. Use Undo to reverse the damage; do not use Ctrl+I a second time!
