When we click on eye sign with the ALT button, it makes only that layer visible, and you can revert it by clicking the same layer again with ALT button.
But if you forget about it and make other layers visible etc, all your folders and files inside become invisible and you need to open folders one by one to edit manually. Show/Hide all layers sometimes help but sometimes it hurts more than it helps.
Is there a way to revert even if we make other layers visible? I couldn't understand how it works but maybe history tool can help? I am not sure.
You can turn on "Allow non-linear history" in History options and then you can delete an individual step from the history without affecting the following steps in the history.

Edit: not that I'm aware of.
What does the history panel show?

History panel shows several "layer visibility" (and few other edits I made), but I am not sure if I can select one of them and just undo it.
I mean for example I delete a layer, and then made 10 edits. To bring back that layer, I should normally undo 11 times. But I wonder if history panel can let me just undo "delete layer" without touching next 10 edits.
If that's possible it can help me with my problem as well, but I have no idea if it is possible or not.

I was dealing with the exact same problem today with a single layer correction and came across your well-formulated question.

Good gracious! I didn't know that. Thank you @bubo74
FWIIW if you get out of sync and need to turn a lot of layers and groups on or off, select the layers and groups, and use the Ctrl + , shortcut (Ctrl + comma).
