Keyboard disconnects every time I start Photoshop

OK why does my keyboard disconnect every time I start Photoshop? It's only disconnected in Photoshop, every other program is fine. But when I return to Photoshop the keyboard is still disconnected. Except for the space bar. That works.

Eventually it comes back but things like the crop tool won't stay selected.

Hi @Jerry 1066, seems strange, for sure. I'm wondering if you are using a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, or another keyboard with automatic pairing? Are you continually connected with a USB-C to Lightning Cable?

It's a magic keyboard connected via bluetooth... but as I mentioned, it's only happening in Photoshop. It never happens in any other program, and if I navigate away from Photoshop to, say, Premiere Pro, it's working fine. Then when I go back to Photoshop it's still cranky. One of the things it likes to do in Photoshop is not allow me to choose a new tool - it will simply keep toggling back to the previous tool when I take my finger off the keyboard. So it's clear the  message is getting through, and the keyboard is well connected. It's how Photoshop is handling the information that is suspect.

Okay, thanks for that extra info. Does this behaviour happen with all versions of Photoshop, and if so, how far back if you can remember? If you revert to a previous release or two, does the keyboard respond properly? Ever try a Preferences reset, even to rule it out?

I only upgraded to 2023 from V6 in January. Also went from a 2010 iMac to a 2023 Mac Studio at the same time, so there aren't any previous versions to compare it with. All I would say is that my experience with the current setup hasn't been too positive so far, with a "sticky" operation throughout, text breaking up, objects splitting apart, files appearing fractured or just plain black, noticeable delays on every operation, artefacts on screen, it's been pretty disappointing tbh. In fact completely dire compared to the 13 year old system.

@Jerry 1066, on hearing this, I'm wondering if it's not just the keyboard giving you problems. In Photoshop, can you go to Help > System Info and copy and paste the text into a reply so we can review your particular setup? There may be some performance and GPU settings in Preferences we can recommend trying to help stabilize things.

Thanks, I took a good look through the specs. You're probably aware that other users have reported various problems using Apple M1 Max GPU and Photoshop in the last year or so. It falls under a discussion of “Which is better for content creation: the Intel Core i9 or the Apple M1 Max?” There isn't always a clear-cut answer or solution, unfortunately.

Meanwhile, from your system info, I notice a few things:

  • The memory used by Photoshop is a bit high at 80% as 70% is recommended.
  • You seem to have enough available scratch disk space and memory.
  • I am assuming you've tried a Preferences reset once or twice without luck?
  • Are you using Rosetta?
  • In Preferences under Technology Previews, try checking “Deactivate Native Canvas” and/or disable “Multithreaded compositing” under Performance as a process of elimination.
  • There is still your original keyboard connection issue that is specific to Photoshop that may have nothing to do with the “sticky” issues you describe. Is it possible to swap out that keyboard as another troubleshooting step?

Beyond this, I don't have enough experience with the M1 Max, but hopefully others will come along with more insights for you. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the reply. At least someone other than me has acknowledged that there's something suspicious going on with Photoshop and Apple M1 Max. When you've been using Photoshop for as long as I have (every single day as my business since 1996) you just know when something is wrong. And something definitely is wrong.

I've tried all the things you mention, and more. I've carried out extensive trials and tests with every conceivable configuration and have come to the conclusion that Photoshop isn't talking properly to the M1 chip. This despite what Apple and Adobe claim.

I'm not opening it using Rosetta. It's supposed to run natively although I may try it sooner or later. I would have thought by now that if it were that simple Adobe would have released an update that recognises the M1 chip and automatically configures Rosetta.

My conclusion from all of my experiences with a brand new, state-of-the-art Adobe/Apple setup over the past two months is that between them they have managed to set the performance and functionality back by twenty years.

Folks, if you are reading this and planning on buying a Mac Studio and running Photoshop - don't. It doesn't work. Buy a PC or buy Affinity.

One of the things it likes to do in Photoshop is not allow me to choose a new tool - it will simply keep toggling back to the previous tool when I take my finger off the keyboard.

By @Jerry 1066

That's a feature, not a bug! It's called spring loaded shortcuts. It allows you to temporarily switch to another tool and then go back to whatever you were doing.

So what happens here is that you're holding the key too long. To switch tools permanently, just tap quickly.

You can disable this feature in preferences - and crucially, you can also adjust the timing. The default interval is apparently too short in your case, and you should set a longer interval.

All the rest of the symptoms you describe sound very much GPU related.

Thanks, that's helpful. However the situation where I can run my hand all over the keyboard and press every single key with no response whatsoever - only in Photoshop - I should imagine isn't something that Adobe were planning to add as a feature. And yes it's all GPU / phantom GPU stuff. I can see Apple going back to a proper graphics card eventually.

I think so too. There are several inherent problems with integrated GPU. It locks the user totally out of any troubleshooting when it doesn't work properly. There is also the issue of a common memory pool with the system, which is potentially a problem with I/O-intensive applications like Photoshop (or GPU-intensive apps like Lightroom).

Integrated graphics has never worked well in Windows, regardless of the specs as such.

hi @Jerry 1066 the "toggling tool" issue is not an issue with your keyboard. Go to Photoshop/Prefences/Tools and uncheck "Spring Loaded Tool Shortcuts". This is a feature to temp swap tools.

Yes, I found out. Thanks. As mentioned previously though the keyboard shuts off totally when I open Photoshop and only comes back after five or ten minutes or so, which is a separate thing to the toggling.

What other bluetooth connections do you have to your Mac? Do you use a Wacom tablet or other with a BT connection? The other thing you can try to test is to go to Apple System Settings/Keyboard then under Text Input choose Edit.. and activate the "Show Input Menu in Menu Bar".

You can then show the Keyboard Viewer.

This will allow you to show the actual keyboard input while you are in Photoshop to see if it is registering in the OS but not repsonding in PS or if the keyboard is completely failing and not giving input signals.

This is still happening. I can use my Mac all day and then as soon as I fire up Photoshop the keyboard has disconnected, all except for the space bar. Nothing else works on the keyboard. I have to minimize Photoshop, use the keyboard elsewhere on the Mac and then when I come back to Photoshop the keyboard will work again. I appear to have to use the keyboard on another app in order for Photoshop to recognize it fully. Oh and none of my other issues have gone away either - text breaking up, artefacts on screen, it's all still happening.

I have pinned down the process that makes this happen.

If I open Photoshop by double-clicking a psd file in Bridge then the keyboard is dead in Photoshop - until I come out of Photoshop and then go back. Simply going back to Bridge and using the arrow key once will reawaken the keyboard in Photoshop.

However. If I open Photoshop normally by clicking on the icon in my dock and then open a file from Bridge to an already running Photoshop then the keyboard issue doesn't happen.

So, it is this - with Photoshop closed, I double-click a file in Bridge which opens Photoshop. This procedure will freeze the keyboard in Photoshop until I use the keyboard elsewhere on the Mac.

This bug is repeatable on my Mac. I have done it with the keyboard activity viewer open and it is showing positive for input - however these keystrokes are not registering in Photoshop.

Work that one out, Adobe.
