Layer Mask not working, leaves subtle transparent halo 21.0.1

No matter what I do, since I updated to the latest Adobe CC photoshop, layer masks will not remove the content entirely, but leaves a halo tranpsarent effect on artwork.

Check your brush colour. It is not quite black in that video i.e. RGB 0,0,0

This solved the problem for me. Even though it looked like my brush was black, it wasn't 100% (RGB 0,0,0) so wasn't hiding 100% of the pixels. I reset my brush to the default black/white swatches and didn't have any more issues.
