Can you provide a screenshot of what you are trying to do, including the layers panel?
It sounds like you are trying to paint on a black mask with a white brush, do you have the mask selected?

Its not very clear what is going on so screenshot will help. Do you have duplicated object (layer) with mask attached to top layer? If both layers are identical then you won't see any change regardles of what you do or paint on mask.

In your screenshot the eraser is selected as the actual tool. You need the brush. Could that be the reason?

Hi there,
From your screen photo, it seems you have selected the eraser tool instead of the brush tool. Erasers wont work on masks since it's only grayscale and doesn't manage transparency (I mean you cannot have transparent pixels in the mask).

Also you seem to have two identical layers on top of each other. In that case, when you paint on the mask, you won't see anything on the canvas. ALT-click on the mask thumbnail to see if you've actually painted into the mask. Or hide the bottom layer.

So just to be sure, is it the right tool selected and the right mask as I pointed on your screenshot ?
You also need to be sure to have the layer mask selected and not the smart object (you can see a white frame around selected layers).
And for the sake of testing, create a new layer and try the brush on it. If it draws something then it's working properly. I suspect you are still using the eraser tool with the "brush" mode selected, that will not work obviously.

Looks like you selected the patch tool, that won't work either. To be sure you selected the brush, please hit "b" on your keyboard, it will select this tool in the green circle:

You do not have the right tool selected. You have the spot healing brush selected. Use the brush tool (Shortcut B)

Now you have the healing tool selected. That's not going to work either. Select the brush tool. Look at Olivier's screenshot from above.

Can we also see the options bar for the Brush tool?
Instead of taking a photo of your monitor, please take a screenshot. The Snipping Tool comes with Windows OS.
