Layer Masks

Friend sent me a psd file. When I go to open it, the layer masks do not appear. How do I go about receiving a file with layer masks so that I am able to edit it?

Do you know what version of PS your friend is using? What version are you using.

Not very clear to me. You do not need layer mask in file to edit it, you can create layer mask at any time. Are you complaining that friend sent you file with layer mask which dissapears when you open file?
