Layered Images turn red when creating luminosity masks

When layering files in PS (24.0) all works well with masks until I generate luminosity masks (via a preset action), at which time the whole image turns red.  It is NOT a quick mask issue as the layer itself (in the drop down tab of layers) isn't highlighted red) just the main display image. This just started happening a couple days ago.  I restarted my Mac (Monterrey 12.6) to no avail).  The only way to get rid of it is to go back in history.

Has anyone else had this issue?  Any suggestions?

Sounds like some step in your action is no longer valid.
