Lighting Effects discontinued. Will they replace it somehow?

Does anyone know if Lighting Effects in the filter gallery will be replaced with an even more awesome way to affect lighting? I dont understand why it has been discontinued, and what, other than keeping an old version, we can do now.

Unfortunately, no one here who knows what's coming can say (due to NDAs).
