P: Liquify with a small marquee selection on a Silicon Mac returns no result.

PS 23.4.2, on a Silicon Mac Studio running Monterey 12.5, As a rule, I've always made a marquee selection slightly larger than the area I plan on liquifying, as historically it takes a great deal less resources and time to bring up the liquify window on large files. In my new silicon Mac set up, liquify goes through all the motions, giving me the proper preview, but upon completion, it returns no result. In frustration, I had resorted to screen capping the preview at 100% and pasting it in my image. Finally I discovered that using a much larger marquee selection would actually return my result. It's a viable workaround, but liquify should work in ANY marquee of any size, as it still does in the most current version on an Intel Mac.

Hi @chazcronOMS sorry to hear this. Curious if you have tried turning GPU compositing off?

Go to Preferences > Performance... click Advanced Settings... and uncheck "GPU Compositing" - then restart Photoshop. Does the problem still occur?

Thank you,

Thank you for responding.  I will give that a try. What kind of performance will I be sacrificing by having that turned off?

Well, I went to the preferences, I went into the performance tab and the graphics processor settings. I clicked on advance settings, but there was no GPU compositing checkbox to disable. So I backed out and unchecked "use graphics processor" instead. I exited out of preferences and tried it, and yes, it does work on a small selection. I didn't even have to restart Photoshop. But it would be rather insane for me to disable graphics acceleration on a silicon Mac because there's a bug in your I didn't even have to restart Photoshop. employer's software. It would be nice if someone at Adobe could use a silicon Mac to test this out and verify the bug.

OK, so I tried square marquee windows from big to small until I hit the number that would not return a liquify result.

728x728 returns a result, anything smaller will not. I confirmed this, you can too.

On a Silicon Mac, make any file that is 728x728 px, do a liquify, result is returned.

Make any file that is 727x727 px or smaller, do a liquify, result is NOT returned.

Do the same thing on an Intel machine, and liquify works below 727x727 px.

This is a bug.

Unless you want to confirm that the only way Silicon Mac users can liquify a file smaller than 727x727 px, you must disable your graphics acceleration.

Sure, if I don't make a small selection on a huge file to isolate the small area I plan on liquifying, I'll have to then zoom way in to find the small area I want to liquify. If I make a small marquee selection (slightly larger than my desired area) Liquify takes me right to the area I want to work on.

@chazcronOMS Does this happen with all files, or just one? Can you share the file, in case it's only affecting one file?

Ah, see that it's any file of that size; I can' repro here on my M1, but will see if I can get somebody with a studio to give it a go.

I just put PS on our M1 Mac Mini server and ran my 727x727px (no result) vs 728x728px (yes result) marquee selection test and confirmed it will not return a liquify result. Are you sure you ran it as I described? Is yours a laptop? I also confirmed I am running the universal version, not the Intel version.

I have the first M1 and ran on a single pixel layer, and also tried on a smart object, and both returned OK. Can you send along your Photoshop System Info (from under the Help menu in Ps)?

You need to run it on a flat image or an image that contain at least 1000x1000 px on a layer to test. A single pixel will work, but under what circumstance would anyone ever liquify a single pixel. Can I ask why you would test on only one pixel and not the number I came up with?

If you want me to screen record it, I will. I have repeated this test on two Studio Macs and one Silicon Mac Mini. Same result on all three.

I posted my sys info, but it didn't accept it I also asked why you would test it on a single pixel and not a flat file, or a layer with at least 727x727 pixels, real world usage. Who is going to liquify a single pixel? I've attached a text file with system info instead of pasting it here, that's probably why it didn't send.

Maybe I should clarify. It's the size of the selection or any file that is 727 px or smaller that nullifies the result. If no selection is made, it will liquify all day.

Think of a huge file where you want to liquify a small section. You could just hit Cmd+Shift+X and then zoom way in on what you wish to liquify. Scrubby zoom, which I use exclusively, inconveniently does not work in the Liquify window. This method does work. However, I have always used a marquee so, in effect, PS is only addressing the small area I wish to liquify. It also handily fills the screen in my liquify window and uses less resources to do it.

If you open or create a 700x700 px image in PS, Liquify WILL NOT WORK on a Silicon Mac whether you use a selection or not.

Just try THAT and you will understand. I have a hard time believing that is not a bug.

Hi @chazcronOMS we appreciate your patience in this as we are trying to get this issue to reproduce.

I did a test on my M1 iMac:

  • Created a new file that was 700px by 700px at 300ppi
  • Painted some brush strokes
  • Went to Liquify and dragged around on it with the default brush

The liquify effect workd as expected. No selection was added to the file, the liquify effect was added to the flattened layer.

Did I miss anything in the test you described above?

Thank you,

I appreciate jumping through the hoops. Those are indeed all the steps. All three Silicon Macs here at our studio failed to produce results. You have my system info. I'd be happy to record my screen showing no results for me if it would help or any other infomation you need.

If you unhook display 2, does that make a difference?

I disabled my BenQ display, still failed to return result. I disabled my Studio display, still failed to return result. This is true for both our Studio Macs and our M1 Mac mini. I will have my coworker try his M1 iMac tomorrow. Attached is an annotated screen recording of the failure. I've already posted my system setup. This was performed after I updated to the latest Monterey, the latest monitor firmware update and the latest Photoshop update

My coworker performed the test on his M1 iMac and his results did return. I wonder if the number of cores in the GPU matter. The mystery continues.

Since PS 23.5, liquify doesn't work when we select small part of image. It has to be a big rectangle or the full image... Very annoying...  We can validate the liquify but the result is not showing !

Can you fix this?!

Thanks,

Eric.

It seems to work here.

What does "doesn't work" mean?

If you restore your preferences using this manual method does it work correctly?
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually
If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.

Try installing Photoshop 2023. Does the problem persist?

Here is a video screenshot to show you how it doesn't work.

I'll try with the 2023 and let you know...

I've tried on several systems and I cannot reproduce.

Let's make sure we're in a default state and there are no stale settings somewhere:

Restore your preferences using this manual method:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

Does it work correctly?

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.
