Looking for the best background for automatic clipping

Hello everyone,

I am a school photographer, and I use subject selection and automatic clipping a lot.

The problem is that I encounter many issues when there is more than one subject in the photo; the clipping is not optimal at all.

We currently use a gray background, but I would like to know if ADOBE recommends a specific background to make subject selection easier?

We can create custom backgrounds if needed.

I’m wondering if patterns on the background could (or could not) improve the automatic clipping.

If anyone has any information, that would be great.

Thanks in advance.

A background that creates more contrast with the subject will be easier to remove.

Hello Myra,

Thank you for your response.

Yes, that’s what we’re trying to create with a light gray background. The problem is that, depending on the clothing (for example, if the subject is wearing gray), the cutout might fail.

We were hoping that Adobe would consider a technical background with highly specialized patterns that Photoshop could automatically detect, but I think it’s a lost cause…

But thank you anyway for taking a look at my question.

Why not shoot against a green screen? Then use an app with chroma keying to remove the background.

Hello @Lumigraphics,

We tried using a green screen. The problem is automatically removing the green contamination in the hair and on the clothes, which is very, very complicated. Unless you have a solution for that, which I’d be thrilled to hear!

Chroma key software. This is usually used for video but check out what an app like Premiere or After Effects does. There are apps more geared toward still images.

I have to ask, why do you need clipping paths?

We need to apply different backgrounds and effects to each image before uploading them. We process a lot of images every day, so automatic selection saves us a lot of time.
