Making proportionate borders for print

Explorer ,
Sep 19, 2023 Sep 19, 2023

Hey all,

I have to print a ton of photos in the coming weeks. I'm trying to make sure that I size everything just right, most importantly i'm trying to figure out how to get borders that are equal all around. I don't want one side of the photo to have thicker borders than the other, i'm okay with croppping a bit.

So for example, for a 3x4 photo that I want to print in 18x24, how should i be making my canvas and image size? I'm thinking 1.5 inch borders all around. They key I guess is that I'll need to crop it a bit so that the borders are equal... Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Fin

If you're applying a Layer Style Stroke for the border, the Stroke will be applied based on the pixels in the image. If the photo extends beyond the canvas, then the Stroke will be applied but not entirely viewable because it too would extend beyond the canvas. You would need to select Delete Cropped Pixels when you make a crop so that the image, and consequently, the Stroke, would be within the bounds of the canvas.

You will be looking to automate this if there are so many images.

An action can record setting the resolution and image size. An action can also record using canvas size to crop the image smaller. Finally, an action can also extend the canvas equally using a relative value and background extension colour.

The action can then be used in a semi-auto fashion on individual images or run via batch or image processing scripts.

Providing before and after images to illustrate would help the forum to provide specific advice over general.

My Default Actions panel contains Frame Channel Action which automates this process.  Optionally, you can apply a Wood Frame, too.

Hope that helps.
