Mask really cuts image

Community Beginner ,
Mar 29, 2025 Mar 29, 2025

When I use a mask , copy this image to a new layer and remove the mask: The thumbnail shows the entire image, but when you select the layer the image is trimmed in relation to the mask.

The image I attached shows the selected layer where you would expect the entire image with the mask overlay shown, but that part has disappeared.

I am not sure I understand what your problem is in the first place. From the screenshot provided, I can say everything appears to be working as expected. If you want to see the entire image, then disable the mask by Shift + clicking on the layer mask.

Hi,
It comes from your second step 'Then select a masked area'. You are making a selection based on your mask and therefore copying based on that selected area.
To duplicate the layer in its entirety, complete with mask, use Ctrl+J (or Cmd+J on Mac)

Thank you for your respons. I'm not sure anymore. Maybe it's me, but I felt like strange things happened when using the mask. I'm used to seeing the entire picture when I use the mask (\ shortcut in Windows), but I don't see the image any more. Only the part which is selected. I added another example.

When I created a new layer this part was removed from the image (this last remark I'm trying to reproduce, but not yet possible).

Bojan is correct. A long as there is a mask, it masks the image - unless you disable the mask.

I found the second problem (which was a bit strange to me:

When I:

- create a layer and add a mask.

- Then select a masked area.

- Then copy the layer.

- remove hte link and mask.

- Only the part of the image is left. I assume that it has something to do with the selection, but I still find it strange.

The next 2 images show what I did. First the thumbnail keeps showing the entire image but when I click from layer to layer only half is shown as in the normal view. Somehow the image is trimmed/cutted after removing the link to the mask and the mask.
