My GPU gives error on opening PS

Windows 11 machine, Dell XPS8940, Graphics card NVIDIA RTX3060.

Adobe Photoshop is reporting that my GPU is not compatible, specifically mentioning that DirectX 12 is unavailable and that a DirectX feature level of 12.0 is required.

My grahics card is a NVIDIA RTX3060 and specs for it say that is fully DirectX 12.0 compatable.

So what is going on? I've already updated the driver to the latest from NVIDIA. I have no idea of what to try next.

Could you open up the start menu, and type "dxdiag" in the search and run the command? Then on the window, go to the first display tab, and post a screenshot of it here, we're looking for the feature levels, like here:

The RTX 3060 is obviously fully capable and has the necessary feature level 12. That's not it.

What happens here is most likely that Photoshop doesn't find or recognize the GPU at all. This is a fairly common problem with dual GPU laptops, but this being a desktop machine we can probably rule that out - unless you're running two displays, one off the motherboard and the other off the RTX.

However, this is Dell, known for making a lot of modifications to the OS and drivers. Some can't even run stock drivers from Nvidia, but require special drivers from Dell. If that's the case, that might be the problem.

If you post the full Help > System Info from Photoshop we can see your GPU configuration.

If you can use Nvidia drivers, download an updated one from Nvidia, and make sure you get the Studio driver, not the Game Ready driver. When installing, click "custtom install" and check clean install to remove all traces of the old driver. Do not install the extra components (GeForce Experience and PhysX). You don't need them and they are known to cause problems.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've done that. I'm typing this reply from my laptop because my desktop went to a black screen and is not usable. The driver install was going and then black screen. What do I do now? I've tried powering down and up several times.

Finally got my screen back. When I installed the Studio driver it would not let me uncheck the box for GEFORCE EXPERIENCE.

Rebooted and opened PS, still get same GPU error.

I followed that line of directions, rebooted and now I don't get the error any more. I get this instead.

What a load of BS to go through all I've gone through these last few day to get it to work. I think both Adobe and MS need to get their you know what together and make this GPU setting stuff easier to do.

If this is a desktop machine, why is the Intel UHD 750 even there in the mix? It shouldn't be. It shouldn't show up in the system info at all.

Are you running the display off a motherboard connector (the main panel)? Don't do that. Connect it directly to the RTX 3060.

If you already have the display connected directly to the RTX, then something really odd is happening here, and you'd have to ask Dell what they're doing. Dell is known for making very extensive modifications to hardware and software, and it's not the first time that is causing problems for Photoshop.

To be clear, the problem isn't that there is an integrated GPU here, the problem is that it's used. It shouldn't be. That is known to cause conflicts.

@D Fosse my work PC has an integrated Intel GPU along with a dedicated Nvidia GPU and both show up in the system info and I don't have any issues with Photoshop on that PC, I keep both drivers up to date.

@D Fosse Think the integrated GPU always shows up (unless disabled in BIOS). Also, in the system info, the RTX 3060 is marked as Preferred: TRUE. So PS should be running on it anyways. Even if it was running on the UHD 750, it still supports all of the required features. I've always had them on my machines, as I've only used Intel CPUs, and never had issues with that. I've also always had GeForce experience to easily update drivers, and it never caused issues.

It's interesting why GPUCapable is 0. @LaneGG  Can you also show what's in the GPU compatibility screen in Help > GPU Compatibility?

It's not whether they both support necessary features. It's that they conflict.

I'm still convinced that is the problem. It might work in some configurations, but cause problems in others.

Since it's the OpenCL section, you can try to disable OpenCL here and relaunch. OpenCL isn't used much now anyway:

You can also see if the UHD 750 turns up in Windows device manager, and disable it there. This is one of the recommended actions in the trubleshooting guide from Adobe linked by Ged.
