Hello

Have an old family photo, which I scanned some time ago as Tiff, I can crop the edge from the bottom, but would like to add background to the top edge. I have tried content aware, but wasnt successfull, also tried the clone stamp tool, and smudge to try and blend it, still didnt look good, would rather not replace the background, unless i can create a new backgroun by sampling an area of the existing background...hope this makes sense, dont want the work done for me, would like some ideas as to my best options, thanks

I have uploaded as PNG and saved as smallest setting

There are some different ways to use Content Aware. Here's one way with an option to modify the result:

  1. Crop all of the edges of the images with Delete Cropped Pixels selected in the Options bar (Window > Options)
  2. With the Crop tool still selected, select Content-Aware in the Options bar, click on the cropped image, raise the top handle (to expand the canvas upward), and click the checkmark (or press Enter/Return)
  3. If you don't like how the Crop tool used Content-Aware fill to fill in the area, select the Rectangular Marquee tool, select the top area, and go to Edit > Content Aware-Fill...

My approach would be:

  • correcting minor blemishes, they are good out of their way: Abambo_0-1657483996272.png

  • Selecting the subject, correcting the selecting if necessary and copying that on a new layer. You see that my selection does not include the whole cushion for the boy, that's an easy correction. You also see that the selection (select subject) is not perfect, but that too can be reworked: Abambo_2-1657484605826.png

  • Reconstructing the blueish background as needed. You still need to use the bluish background as source, but as you can blend the background differently, you will get a better result because the boy and the girl will sit on to of anything you will do. For reconstructing the background, you may try all you have at your disposal, but I would start with small amounts of content aware fills.

Hello

thanks for the ideas, how do I use a sample of the background for content aware ? Do I simply move a uniform piece of background anywhere and use content aware to generate the rest, thanks

No, I would use a new layer place it under the first layer, then you can make the background any color you wish.

You can fill with color or pattern too. I hope this helps.

I'm quite new to Photoshop, I assume you're referring to a layer mask ? How do I sample from the original background to generate the new one ? Thanks

Ok, here is a step by step

1.  In the right panel create a new layer.

2  Drag that layer below the masked layer.

3 Fill the blank layer the color you would like it to be.

The original masked photo will show with and the new back ground. Save the file as a psd file. When you are satisfied with the background. You can flatten  the photo and save as a jpeg. You will always have the psd file if you need to change something.

I think this video explains the way you are wanting to do it.

Here's a quick and dirty edit where I mostly used the Spot healing brush set to Content-Aware for the edges.

The clone stamp was used next to the girl's arm, and for the white spot above her shoulder.

The right and bottom edges were cropped.

Hello I used the tools you suggested, the right side of the background is still not as uniform as I would like, but it's good, added could correction and a little sharpening what do you think

had to reduce the photo size to post...9683974C-1F9E-48AA-903A-B4E6C3A63F60.jpeg

Use a linear gradient in the Camera Raw filter (Filter menu) to brighten the top right corner.

I wouldn't sharpen this image at all, you'll only make it worse.

Your screenshot viewed at 100% looks like below.

You might be able to sharpen it a little, using the Camera Raw filter with a low Radius value (0.5) and a high Masking value, like 70-90. Masking protects the noise from being sharpened, press the Alt key while dragging the slider to see the effect.

White areas will be sharpened, black areas will be protected from sharpening.

Always view the image at 100% view or higher when applying sharpening and noise reduction.

Personally, I would not try to smoothen the background, I'd just leave it as it is.
