No Save as or Save a copy dialogue box

I have a brand new MacBook and an up-to-date photoshop and I cannot save my work. This is the third time it's happened but the first time where I had a lot of  work to save. I have read all the threads but nothing really gives an answer to why this is happening or a fix. I did find a work around but would like a permanent solution.

What have you done for all-purpose trouble-shooting so far? 

Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:
