Photos being opened with Photoshop open w/ Camera Raw instead

Anytime I try to open a photo with Photoshop I am met with a pop-up window of Camera Raw instead. I've disabled in my settings from various tuts to change how files are handled, same result. I've chosen "Open With" and selected Photoshop, same result. I've reverted back to older versions of Photoshop, same result. I don't want Camera Raw to open at all because this type of thing has never happened to my iterations of Ps and I see it as an unnecssary hurdle just to open a picture in Ps. Can someone explain what might be going on or know of a way to disable CR without uninstalling it? To my knowledge CR is needed for Ps

There is absolutely nothing wrong here.

A raw file (cr2) has to open in ACR by necessity! Photoshop cannot open raw files directly. That's why ACR is there.

It still opens through ACR when you hold shift. The dialog is just suppressed, and the image processed at default settings. I can't really imagine why this is desirable - it defeats the whole purpose of shooting raw in the first place.

I started having the same issue today. Everything, png/jpg/tiff... all image files opened the Camera Raw interface in photoshop instead of simply opening the file. This happened whether I dragged the file directly in photoshop, right click and opened it with photoshop.exe or used file>open from photoshop. The only solution I had was to delete the camera raw plugin entirely which is not really a solution but prevents it from happening.

Just to add to this, I forgot to mention I tried disabling jpg/tiff support for camera raw in photoshop preferences and it did not solve it, neither did unchecking "Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for supported.." option. I also tried opening older files which I know I've opened before without this issue happening and the ACR interface still showed up.

Is there no solution offered yet for this issue with Camera Raw being forced upon us every time we attempt to open an image in Photoshop? How do you disable/remove Camera Raw altogether?

The solution has been clearly stated if you look two posts up.

If disabling jpeg/TIFF support doesn't do that, it's corrupt preferences and you need to reset. Preferences are prone to corruption because they are resaved on every application exit, so an irregular shutdown can corrupt them.

That should have read, disabling those options did not work.
With Camera Raw opening the only route out seems to be by pressing escape
which does not allow the image to be forwarded to PS for further
processing. It is as if the Camera Raw screen is too big to let me see any
options at its base, if they exist.

Tell us exactly how you open the files. Double-clicking from Bridge, from Windows Explorer, from somewhere else? What file types are they, what extension, any embedded smart objects?

I open Photoshop.
>From its screen it’s click on the 2nd item down, OPEN, which is under NEW.
>From within my image files on the PC I pick a CR2 (raw file produced by
Canon 6D camera).
I click on that file. It opens in CAMERA RAW.
I see no way of forwarding that image to Photoshop itself. The base of the
Camera Raw screen ends showing the Saturation slider on the right and
nothing below that level. The only way to close it is to press ESCAPE, and
that just takes me back to the PS opening page.
If I select the image file and then holding down the shift key click open
in the bottom right area of PS, it opens directly into PS, bypassing CAMERA
RAW.
This is what I want to achieve as default.
I have used PS for many years now and have not encountered this issue
before.

By holding down the shift key as you press open the image is opened
directly in PHOTOSHOP without going into CAMERA RAW. So how is that
happening?

I can only suggest it is a keyboard shortcut option-

[Open] CR3   >   ACR   >   Photoshop.

[Shift + Open] CR3   >   (invisible ACR)   >   Photoshop.

I agree with @D Fosse  "it defeats the whole purpose of shooting raw in the first place."

And consider also that the Camera Raw FILTER is NOT the same as adjustments in the ACR PLUGIN.

Regards. My System: Lightroom-Classic 13.2 Photoshop 25.5, ACR 16.2, Lightroom 7.2, Lr-iOS 9.0.1, Bridge 14.0.2, Windows-11.

I have already discovered the workaround which routes you through what you
describe as "Invisible" Camera Raw.
Which is what my system used to do every time until this most recent update.
Presently, an image opened as previously winds up in Camera Raw with
nowhere to go next. I am either not able to see the next step forward
button on my screen or am missing the action required to move forward into
PS itself.

Problem resolved. As I had been thinking latterly, a chunk off the bottom
of the CAMERA RAW screen was simply not showing in the Display monitor,
which contained the buttons to move forward viz: OPEN and DONE. I imagine I
usually simply click on OPEN on the CAMERA RAW screen without ever using
that for my adjustments.

Again, a raw file cannot be opened by Photoshop. It is opened through Camera Raw, but by holding Shift the Camera Raw dialog is suppressed, not shown, and it goes through at default settings.

Camera RAW is the component of Photoshop which enables it to open RAW files,

since you are opening a RAW file it has to open in Camera Raw.

Photoshop cannot open RAW directly

I hope this helps

Did you follow the process I detailed?
I AM able to open a Raw file in PS without going through Camera Raw by
holding down the shift key after picking the file to open in PS when I
press the OPEN button in PS.
Please try it for yourself before telling me it can’t be done. Do you want
me to film the process?
