Photoshop 2022 export has worse quality than legacy export?

Hello everybody,

Today I was playing around with file formats, specifically PNG and WEBP. I wanted to convert some old images in PNG toWEBP. I had stored all the original AI files, as I always do, in the cloud. However, I also had some PNG copies on Google Drive. So just to make sure that these PNG copies had been exported properly I decided to open the AI files from the cloud and re-export the files as PNGs. The height of the product images is set to 600px and I always check "Smaller File (8-bit)", since these PNG images have to be as small as possible.

I was very surprised when I saw that the recently exported file was super jagged around the edges compared to the PNG file I had saved on Google Drive.

Notice how jagged around the edges the first image is! This is with Photoshop 2022 export. I thought for sure I must have made a mistake so I went back and re-did it several times, also attempting "Save as" rather than export.

Eventually, I went to Preferences --> Export --> Enable Legacy Export. I then tried again and voilà, the quality was again perfect and there was no jaggedness. Am I missing something here? Why is the export in Photoshop 2022 so bad?

Thanks!
