Photoshop 2026: Subject Selection and Background Removal Not Working

New Here ,
Nov 13, 2025 Nov 13, 2025

I'm having issues with Photoshop. When I use Select Subject or Remove Background, it doesn’t work — it says it couldn’t find any subject. It doesn’t matter if the image is HD; it still doesn’t work. Does anyone have a solution? This started happening with the 2026 version; in the 2025 version, it worked fine. I installed and reinstalled Photoshop, but the problem continues.

@BrTijerino both are working fine on my system with Photoshop version 27.0, have you tried manually resetting your Photoshop preferences

Remember to back up your settings before doing the preference reset

Thanks, the issue was that I was performing the action from the device when it actually needed to be done in the cloud. I'm attaching screenshots in case someone else runs into the same problem.

Hi @511 DMH, welcome to the community!
Could you share a few more details about what’s happening? Which version of Photoshop are you using? Does this occur with every file, or just some? Are you on Mac or Windows?
Also, have you tried adjusting the settings under Preferences > Image Processing > Select Subject and Remove Background to either Device or Cloud?
Thanks
Alek

Hello @Aleke

I am using 27.1.0 release of Adobe Photoshop on MacOS Sequoia 15.6.1 , with Cloud processing fot select subject and remove background.

The select subject problem appeared when I have updated first to Photoshop 2026. When using the option, the entire image was selected, and not the actual subject, or even radom spots of darker colors within the image.

With the latest update it seems to have solve at least one of the issues. I work a lot with Linked files within my projects. For JPEG or PNG files the select seems to be working, but when I have a PSD file embedded the selection that is made is for the entire file, not a subject.

I hope it makes sense the way I have explained it.
Thank you.

Hi @511 DMH!
Could you share a few screenshots of the issue, including the full Photoshop window and any relevant panels? That’ll help us take a closer look and figure out what’s going on.
Thanks so much!
Alek
