Photoshop 26.11 unusable after a while

Hi, Has anyone experienced this ? I find that in the latest versions of Photoshop (26.11 but I also experienced it with the last 2 versions), the software kind of freezes afer a while (can be 1/2 hour, can be more) : every step, like changing tool, clicking on another layer, making a selection... take like 1 second to load, which renders photoshop unusable. It's like the memory is full after a while or something. I tried to modify the options in preferences>performance or work disks but it doesn't change a thing... When the "freeze" happens, the only thing you can do is to close photoshop and reopen it and then it start to work properly again.
It's the first time I experienced this and I've used photoshop for 20 years.

@jeromea13244388 can you post your Photoshop system info, in Photoshop go to Help > System Info, hit the copy button and paste the entire thing into this thread

Maybe the problem lied in the scratch disks... I always had 2 scratch disks selected, C: (1) and D: (2) and I just kept the n°1 selected and relaunched photoshop and for now there's no sign of photoshop "freezing"... I figure that maybe the slowing down is when photoshop was moving to the 2nd scratch disk or something like that...

I see you have 700 GB free space on C, which should be enough for most practical purposes. You can keep D as secondary, but let C be your primary scratch disk.

The memory allocation at 85% is too high - especially since you only have 16GB RAM installed. Remember that other processes need memory too. Dial it back to max 70%. While 16 GB RAM isn't much, it's not necessarily a problem as long as you have enough scratch disk space. This is what the scratch disk is for.

How many history states do you have? This eats memory and scratch disk space. Keep it at 25 or below.

That's the general advice. Aside from that, we've seen some cases where the GPU memory consumption runs unchecked, and ultimately eats into system memory and the system pagefile. This can potentially bring the whole system to a halt. Open the Task manager while working, and when it slows down, check the GPU tab and GPU memory consumption. Many of these cases have been resolved by a complete reset of preferences. The preferences contain the whole application configuration, and corrupt preferences can give odd symptoms that tend to look like application bugs.

@D Fosse Thank you. To be honest, I normally don't go as high as 85% of allocated memory but Here I was fiddling with the percents to see if it would change anything. Normally I'm at 75%. Also I like to have a lot of history states, I know it uses more resource but it often helped me overcome some drawing mistakes 😄
For the rest, as I said in a new message up in the conversation, I think the problem came mainly from the scratch disks. I unchecked the secondary disk and now it seems to run smoothly. As I said, it seems that photoshop slowed down when it went from one disk to the other... Is that something that could happen ? Anyway now I had a 2 1/2 hour session with only C as a scratch disk and no slowing down at all. I'll keep you posted if I experience the bug again.

The main question (maybe worth looking into from a technical standpoint) is why it happened now, as I haven't changed my performance specifics for quite a few years (always had the 2 scratch disks checked) and I never experienced this slowing down.

What kind of disk is it? Internal or external?

The scratch file is divided into 16 GB chunks, each a separate temp file, and when one drive is full it will just make the next 16 GB temp file on the other drive. So that shouldn't be any noticeable transition.

They're both internal disks. C is ssd, the other is not. I only noticed the bug since 26.9.

@D Fosse I downgraded to a previous driver for my nvidia graphic card and it seems to be more stable... Maybe the problem lied in the september driver update of nvidia studio... To be continued, I guess...

Yeah, I was just going to suggest taking another look at the GPU. I mentioned above that we've seen some cases of memory leaks from the GPU - although mostly from systems with integrated GPUs that uses shared system memory. But even a discrete GPU can access system memory if its own onboard VRAM runs out.

I don't know how much of this controlled by Photoshop and how much is controlled by the GPU driver. Probably both. Anyway, fingers crossed.

@D Fosse Ok, so I can rule out the nvidia driver, as I experienced the same problem today, with the old driver I reinstalled. There's indeed an increase in GPU memory usage when the slowing down happens. It appears in task manager like that :

No, this looks normal.

Under more heavy workloads, it will usually go up to around 85 - 90% and then level out. The problematic cases is when it does not level out, maxing out to 100% and then starting to eat into shared system memory (the graph below).

This is a mystery. I really can't explain this.

Yeah I just looked at it under regular conditions and the task manager looked the same, you beat me to it 😄

I deleted and re-pasted the photoshop settings, I'll see if it changes anything. If it don't I'll delete them and recalibrate all the settings manually.

Hi @CMass, I experienced the same problem after I deleted and re-pasted the photoshop settings actually, so I completely deleted the settings and put back all the values manually... From then on, I haven't experienced the bug but I'm being careful because it seems the bug usually happens when I have several "heavy" files open at once (I can have several 60 ppp A4 pages open) and it doesn't seem I dealt with that much heavy files lately. I'll let you know if I see it again.

That doesn't help at all - you're just putting back the same corrupt settings that caused the problem in the first place. You need to let Photoshop build new settings, that's the whole point.

@D Fosse That was the probelm when i copied-pasted the ancient folder but note that i said that after that i deleted the settings... When i said i put back the values i mean i started from scratch, it's new settings, a new settings folder but I just check and uncheck parameters how I like them, retyping the keyboard shortcuts etc. I just built a new settings folder so whatever was supposed to be corrupt in the old one isn't here anymore.
