Photoshop complaining about lack of memory.

I've been using photoshop for 20+ years and never had an issue with it until now.

It seems to be using ridiculous amounts of memory since the latest update and complains about lack of memory with very little use, can anyone help?

Adding to this post, I feel betrayed by Adobe, being a loyal customer for many years all I see recently is increased use of pointless AI and no real improvements to the core application. If this continues, I'll be looking elsewhere for my editing workflow.

The bridge/camera raw/photoshop workflow has been great for many years and is now completely broken. Why? Because adobe panders to the users with no skill or imagination.

The idea that I should reset my preferences that have been working for many years is a joke. If adobe can't manage version control regarding preferences, then they should be out of business.

Preferences are prone to corruption because they are rewritten on every application exit (as opposed to program files that are read-only). An irregular shutdown can easily corrupt preferences.

The preferences file contains the entire app configuration, not limited to user settings. Corrupt preferences can cause unprdictable behavior.

Exactly how much memory is it using? Look in Task Manager. How much memory have you allocated in Preferences? (Don't exceed 70% or so).

Do you have a lot of brushes, gradients etc installed? That can eat memory.

Any third-party plugins? Plugins run outside Photoshop's address space and need their own memory - but that memory tends to be reported from Photoshop.

And just so we're clear - these messages say low memory, not low scratch disk space? How much scratch disk space do you have?

Indeed it does, and I don't see any extra plugins there either. So strike those two.

It would still be useful to see how much memory it actually is consuming (from Task Manager).

I'm not sure if your rant is going to gain traction with Adobe on this forum.

We empathize with you of course. Productivity takes a big hit with these glitches. 

You're going to need to take a decision imho.

Sorry for ranting a bit, but this is really frustrating. One thing I've noticed is that when opening a single 32mp file in camera raw, the computer's vram usage increases by roughly 4gb, is this normal? If I turn off Graphics card use in the preferences, it complains that this will be a requirement in future.

VRAM is GPU video ram and yes you want Photoshop to use that - it speeds up the compositing on screen.

What does Windows task manager show about actual RAM (not VRAM) when you get a memory warning?

I had 2 images open in photoshop (3000x3000 pixels) with a couple minor edits and my mouse froze for a second, I opened the task manager and Photoshop & Bridge combined were using over 10gb of ram (not vram). I hit prtsc, my 2nd screen flashed a few times and went black, then photoshop's menus went invisible and when I hit ctrl+v there was nothing in the new layer.
