Photoshop crashes everytime when 3D final render

Hi,

how slow and unstable Adobe apps became this year is another topic but one of the results is our Photoshop crashing everytime we hit "Render" button on 3D layer - also after fresh OS restart with no other apps opened. Does anyone know how to deal with it or at least how to fully reset all the preferences of this app?

Btw. this "render progress indicator"? Where is it? We get nothing beside the small modal saying it should be in the lower left corner.

We stopped counting how much money we've lost, how many clients we've disapointed or topics we're written on this and other forums this year because of what Adobe started doing with their apps. It's just ridiculous I get back to this forum every two weeks because another app is crashing after another update. At some point we've stopped updating to the lastest versions until they make another update of update but this strategy also didn't help.

Hi

For your 3D issues - can you post your settings from Preferences - 3D.

Also please go to Photoshop System Info and click copy - then paste the info into this thread. That way we can see if there is anything in your set up that may be causing issues.

You also asked how to reset preferences. Go to Preferences > General and click reset preferences on Quit. Then close and restart Photoshop.

Hi Dave!

Will do it as fast as Photoshop let me do it. For the last 2h it's been rendering or doing something I don't know because when I click PS icon only parts of the UI shows. But fans go faster and slower from time to time so I hope it does render. Don't know why it takes so much time though - it's only one small letter with 3D effect...

Hi

I don't see any issues in your system settings or system info.

Photoshop can take a long time to render large detailed scenes but a simple text extrusion it should not take long. What bit depth was the document you rendered (i.e. 8 /16 or 32 bit) and what pixel size (H x W)?

Updated the Photoshop to the latest version. Cleared all the preferences files. Restarted the iMac. Created Smart Object of the 3D layer so I could render it in another, much smaller in dimensions (blank background) file. Crash after hitting "render"...

Here are the logs: https://www.dropbox.com/s/tbf9c2zbvhnjxqt/photoshopcrash_29-12-2017.pdf?dl=0

I render at RGB 8 bit, here are dimensions:

Screen Shot 2017-12-29 at 18.38.31.png

UPDATE: it crashes EVERYTIME I hit render.

2nd UPDATE: I moved all the settings files and also done everything Photoshop Troubleshooting says - so now my file is 12.3mb, dimensions as above, NOT crashing after hitting "render" button but staying stuck on the color wheel cursor, not rendering at all. Screenshot below:

Screen Shot 2017-12-29 at 18.44.19.png

3rd UPDATE: This is ridiculous... I just shrinked the file to 72dpi just to check if it renders and guess what? Also stuck... How the F#@$ can I manage to do the job on time in ANY printing office if I render the stupid letter for the last 4h?!?!?!?!?!?! Got no time for this bull#@$#@$ !

Screen Shot 2017-12-29 at 18.53.00.png

4th UPDATE: Guess what - after X restart it started rendering but it produces nothing... No matter if I add black background or not:

Hi

First a tip. When you rendered you were probably rendering the entire page. Most of the render time will have been taken up rendering empty space when all you needed was the individual letters a and e.  To speed up rendering make a selection around the letter then render the image (only the content inside the selection is rendered, speeding things up considerably).

The very slow render was also caused by the use of the stereo anaglyph camera. On my PC this increased the render time for an individual letter from 17 minutes to 34 minutes.

The time remaining box can take a short while to appear - it seems to time the first part of the render then it works out and shows the time for the remainder.

I hope that helps you

davescm,

first of all - thank You for Your time! Could You please send me the file with already rendered letters? I'm still having issues with them.

Second of all - as I wrote in private message and before, I converted the letters to smart object and shrinked the background so only letters would render. That didn't help. The "a" letter for example completely disappeared after render.

Yes I do use stereo anaglyph camera because this is the effect I want to achieve. 34 minutes is ok - after 6h I still didn't get any render so I don't think the issue lays in the stereo camera.

I recorded the video how it looks like on my iMac - will post soon.

UPDATE: after 4 minutes on stopwatch after I hit render button, this is how my screen looks like:

Screen Shot 2017-12-29 at 22.14.02.png

Nothing happens. Only grey spinning wheel cursor. It's physically impossible that it renders on Your PC and it doesn't on my iMac...

UPDATE 2: 8th minute - still no rendering rectangle, nor rendering process indicator, only grey spinning wheel cursor...

UPDATE 3: after 10 minutes I opened the same file I sent You, under the same link, marked the rendering space with marque tool and hit the render button. Gonna grab something to eat and will get back after 1 hour.

Thanks Dave! Works like a charm.

Still though - why is my iMac having issues with the render? That's a mystery.

Could You please paste Your PC's spec here?

Hi

Aside from using Windows , my system is very similar to yours where it matters for 3D.

Photoshop CC2018 (v19.0 r190)

Windows 10 v 1709 build 16299.125

Processor Intel i7-3930K running at 3.8GHz. This has processor 6 cores and 12 logical cores. (Final render uses all 12 logical cores)

Motherboard ASUS P9X79Pro

RAM 64GB (but your document did not use anywhere near that)

GPU AMD 7970 3GB at 1.1 MHz - driving 3 HP monitors

500GB SSD System drive

3 x 2TB drives

still nothing... I updated the system to High Sierra, updated everything I could, made additional free space on the hard drive, restarted the iMac and guess what?

Now I don't even get the rendering indicator - the Photoshop just crashes whenever I hit "render" button. Video below:https://www.dropbox.com/s/7kqgi6rb0vumvt8/adobe_renderingissue_1080p.mov?dl=0

Hi

I just watched your video and you definitely have an issue that is not normal.

Have you tried resetting your Photoshop Preferences ?

If that does not work I would try uninstalling - running the CC cleaner and re-installing.

Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems

However I'll also link gener7 who is a Mac user and may see something in your system info that I am missing as a Windows user.

davescm Thanks Dave for taking Your time and trying to help us - as You can see, there's def something odd going on with our iMac.

I somehow managed to start the render without photoshop crashing but 2h later the fans are still spinning but app is not responding.

Will try to reinstall whole CC package.

P.S. Yeap, I'm resetting the Preferences at the beggining of the video

As part of your Subscription, you can install CC 2017 from your Creative Cloud Desktop app and see if the 3D render works better there.

From Photoshop CC, choose "Other versions" and select CC 2017 from the list that shows up.

Screen Shot 2017-12-30 at 12.15.14 PM.png

Then see how your renders work.

Hi Paul,

Apologies for the frustration caused so far due to this crash during Rendering. Thanks for providing the video of the sequence prior to crashing. Not much stands out currently as to what the problem is here. One possible point of concern would be the 90% ram usage set in Preferences > Performance -- We typically do not recommend going much over 70% there so the OS still has RAM to function properly.

Curious what the crash report says that you've clicked Ignore on? If you click Report, you should see the crash dialog text.

There are two crash reporters, the first one is Apple's, and the second one should be Adobe's (though I'm not seeing that popup on your machine in the video).

If you do get the Adobe crash report, Could you send those to Adobe and input your email address so we can look at it from our end?

This is an Illustrator help article, but the crash report looks the same from Photoshop: Share information about a crash

Additionally, you could paste the crash log contents (either Apple's or Adobe's) and link to the text here using a service such as Pastebin.com. Perhaps the crash log will give us a more definitive idea of what's crashing here.

One thing that I've not seen tried thus far over twitter nor here on the forums, would be a test of this process inside a New Admin user account. This test will provide new preferences, clean user-specific login items, as well as creating new user permissions.

Steps to do that are here: macOS Sierra: Set up users, guests, and groups on your Mac

See if that helps at all.

If not, then the crash log will likely be our next-best-bet.

Regards

Pete

I am playing the devil's advocate here.

Instead of using Photoshop for 3d rendering, my suggestion would be to switch to a proper 3d application. Why do I say this? Because Photoshop's 3d rendering:

  1. is completely outdated and rendering technology has advanced tremendously;
  2. has render times that are slower than a snail in mud;
  3. results in pretty bad final render quality (compared to what is out there);
  4. doesn't provide quick real preview renders of what to expect;
  5. doesn't leverage the GPU to increase rendering speed.

No matter how much wishful thinking on our part, Photoshop's 3d rendering (and there is only one word for it, pardon my French here) sucks. Sorry. No easier way of saying this.

Rendering an anaglyphic 3d letter like yours in Blender takes a minute or less at a much higher resolution - with more advanced effects such as sub-surface scattering perhaps two minutes on my aging system (although my GPU is a gtx1080 which speeds up rendering a lot). But even with CPU rendering it'd be much faster than Photoshop - but invest a bit in a good GPU will save you literally hours of rendering time.

Instead of waiting around for Photoshop to finish 3d rendering and wasting precious time which could be spent on fine-tuning and polishing the end result, I'd advice you to learn a basic 3d application. On a Mac Blender can take advantage of an AMD GPU.

Quick anaglyphic render done in Blender (with sub-surface scattering - without takes a minute to complete). Render time final high resolution 1000x1500: two minutes. half resolution previews like the one below typically take 10-20 seconds to complete.

Sorry that you're having issues with rendering in 3D.

The primary reason it is taking a long time to render is that there seems to be transparency on top of it being an anaglyphic 3d letter. But even if it was one or the other by itself  it would take more time than just a solid simple color. And yes, that's just not as cool...

I see Pete Green, is on this thread is collecting more information so that we can look more closely at the problem.

And as far as playing Devil's Advocate... sure Photoshop 3D is not perfect but it is a great way to learn from a familiar setting. I would agree that if you want to more into 3D designing then finding an application like, Adobe Dimension or even Cinema 4D would be better in the long term. In fact, if you have subscription Adobe Dmension is a free download. You can export your Photoshop 3D letters as OBJ files and render them in Adobe Dimension.

However, even using those applications you're subject to what your computer hardware can provide. You might seems some speed ups here and there but as a 3D scene gets more complex (e.g. Materials, Lights) render times can slow to a crawl.

Also keep in mind that when rendering you don't have to wait for it to "finish." I find more often than not that I will cancel the render before it's done because it's good enough. And of course document size can have an effect as well, what is the maximum size you need?

  • Tips: And to parrot Davescm > Most of the render time will have been taken up rendering empty space when all you needed was the individual letters.
  • Also if you don't need an IBL (Image Based Light) turn it off. I can't tell if you have one or not or are using one. It will add all the soft shadows that take extra time to render. And then selecting only the letter becomes a super time saving trick.

Hope this helps!
