Photoshop crashing opening files

I am experiencing crashes upon opening files. 

I was on version 24.3, and the object selection tool was crashing things. so I reverted to 22.2. The selection was fine, then opening files was crashing the software.  After reading the Adobe suggestions, I decided to reinstall 24.3.  Opening files is still crashing the software. I am paralyzed by this issue in my work. 

After reading another thread, I am pasting the system information below for anyone's review and assistance... which would be much appreciated! These crashes are relatively new to me but are extremely frustrating given the dependency and cost fo the subscription.

Hi @leviathan28 a few things to try - do this in order and restart PS after each. If no improvement continue to the next option.

First try resetting your Photoshop preferences manually - not automatically with the shortcuts or general prefences button.
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#reset-preferences

Next go to Photoshop Preferences/Technology Preview and check “Disable Native Canvas”.

Third, go back to Preferences/Tech Preview and check “Use Older GPU Mode (2016)”.

If none of that works, go to Photoshop Preferences/Performance and disable the GPU. If this works - that leads to a fauly GPU card or driver update. Try rolling back if you have recently installed a driver update.

Remember to restart PS after each change.

Hi @leviathan28 have you tried updating to Ps 24.4.1 and see if that solves your issue?

I have updateed photoshop to the latest version and OPENING A FILE now crashes the software. RIDICULOUS. 

My crash reports are being sent in automatically, but I did reset the box as you suggested. still sending them in as far as I know.

Nothing worked until the third suggestion "Third, go back to Preferences/Tech Preview and check “Use Older GPU Mode (2016)”.

I can AT LEAST open files again. I will try to begin work again and update if this work around fixed it. I am confused as to why this worked, but thankful...so far.

@CoryShubert @kevin stohlmeyer I have done all things you both have suggested. (incidentally consumers should not be doing these things to fix software issues but that this another discussion) I could open files, then I couldn't make selections in those files to complete work. the selection tool crashes the s program. just trying to chang it from that object selection thing to a magic wand...crash. selecting things is an IMPORTANT function when working here. What the heck is going on? Lost productivity is getting expensive! 

Updated all drivers, compatibility check, the suggestions by you both, plenty of scratch and ramm... i have a newsih setup and robust memory. These issues dod not start until recently, so I am really confused as to what is happening/changed. 

My crash reports have been sent since the beginning of this by the way. That you can not see them or find them on your end is an indication to me of other problems with he system that this in place. Getting angrier every minute we are down.

@leviathan28 thank you for your updates, to be clear, are you able to open files without crashing using the Older GPU setting?

We want to make sure you are able to work without any crashes... and we have found two of your posted crashes now, so something you changed or updated is now allowing us to see them.

I have a similar Windows machine setup (same 3080 card) so far I have not reproduced the issue. If we can narrow what might be different, maybe I can reproduce the issue. 

Attached is an image of the Preferences to modify how the Object selection tool works. If this works without any issue, then enable your GPU again. 

If you could provide a screen shot of your workspace with a typical image that causes the crash that would be helpful. Maybe it's the content (it can happen) or HUDs (heads up display) that might generate errors with GPUdrivers.

@CoryShubert I did have the “Disable Native Canvas” and  “Use Older GPU Mode (2016)” selected.  That allowed me to open files without crashing for a while. However, this was after moving to the previous version of PS to avoid the initial issue. This whole issue started because the selection tool was crashing the software.  THEN the opening files issue began, and the selections tool (no object selection available in this PS version) was working normally when I could open a file. So I updated to a 24.4.1 version that was previously not available, hoping it would correct both opening files and selection tool. It did not fix the problems. Thus my frustrated follow-up post. 

NOW I am running the latest PS 24.4.1 with “Disable Native Canvas” and  “Use Older GPU Mode (2016)” selected AND @Daniel Presedo suggestion regarding image processing and selection processing set to MORE STABLE, and it seems to be working.  It is an odd set up and I will have to remember this if I reinstall int he future.

If you ONLY have this selected > image processing set to MORE STABLE < and all is working well, then we have a good idea of where the problem is.

I went ahead and unchecked “Disable Native Canvas” and (uncheck) “Use Older GPU Mode (2016)” .

I could not open files anymore. 

After RE-checking those two items, AND the more stable selection, I can work again.

What update are you expecting @leviathan28 ? This is not a "band aid" solution. Those options are there for a reason. Obviously something on your particular system requires you to use those two options to open files without crashing. It is a valid solution to your issue.
