Photoshop crashing, quick selection tool, massive file

PS is crashing in a large file when I use the quick selection tool only.  The file opens easily and I have no problem working with other tools (clone stamp, spot healing brush, transform etc.).  I have posted twice in this forum about this, each time closing the post thinking the issue has been resolved after making modifications per suggestions but the problem returns.

The file is a single layer PSB.  It is massive (105,000 x 11,000 px and 6.1 GB).  The fact that I can work easily in the file except for the quick selection tool makes me think it’s the tool, not the file size.  Since I don’t have problems with the quick selection tool in smaller files, however it could be a combination of the two.

I have implemented the suggestions at:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/optimize-photoshop-cc-performance.html

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/basic-trouble-shooting-steps.html

as well as Tom Shue's youtube video for working with large files.

Possible causes of the crash might be:

  1. I am on a laptop, not desktop.  But it’s pretty powerful (Dell G3 15).  It has a i7-8750H CPU; my graphics driver is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti which has 4 GB VRAM.
  2. My Scratch Disk is my 1 TB system HD.  500 GB is in use leaving 500 GB free.  I work on my PSD and PSB files off of a 4 TB external HD.

I have reset Preferences and reset All Tools.  I updated my graphics drivers and made sure I was using the latest version of PS.

If anyone has ideas for why this is happening, I would appreciate hearing.  (I check the box “Send Crash Report” for every crash, and there is a message that Adobe “may” contact me about the problem with a possible solution, but I have heard nothing).

Thanks,

Barton

Hi Barton,

Sorry to hear about Photoshop crashing, let's make it right.

Could you please share Photoshop's Help > System Info dialog text here? As it would be helpful for us to troubleshoot further.

Also, as you've already tried several troubleshooting steps, could you please try using the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to remove Photoshop from the laptop and everything related to Photoshop, then reinstall Photoshop again via the Creative Cloud desktop app and let us know if it helps? https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

Regards,
Sahil

I ran the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool as suggested and the crash is still occurring.  However, my experience differed from the instructions in the following respects:

1.  In 8.d of the instructions, it says "From the list of applications for the selected option that appears on the screen, select the application that you want to remove by typing the number that corresponds to the app name and then press Enter."  There was no list, just an option that said "1.  Clear All" or perhaps "1.  Clean All" or something like that.  I typed "1" and then Enter.  Since at this point I had uninstalled all Adobe Apps, it's not clear to me that any should have been found.

2.  I was unable to open the Tool.log referenced to confirm the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool had run correctly, as when I opened Wordpad and navigated to my C drive there was no folder named "Documents and Settings," so I could not find the file.

I'd appreciate any additional suggestions.  Thank you.

Hello Sahil.Chawla, I have not heard fro you after your initial post offering to help troubleshoot this issue and my replies.  Has a decision been made not to go forward with trying to resolve this?  Thanks.

So 4 years later and this problem still exists with no resolution?

Adobe is very good at having people from India call me and lie about needing to upgrade my personal Adobe account to a business acount...but your company is terrible at resolving serious bugs with software that I am paying for. This is the problem with your subscription model. Your company has little motivation to improve the product or fix bugs when you get paid regardlesss of your performance.

Why do you need such an absurdly large document – what is the final output format / use?

The image is a composite panorama of a construction fence whose actual size is approximately 50 ft. x 8 ft.  The fence contains layers of print advertising that have accumulated over time and degraded/been partially removed/torn away; it is feasible that it could be printed and the high level of detail would need to be evident.  At actual size if printed it would be approx. 150 ppi.

You could probably get away with a much lower resolution than 150PPi for a subject being viewed from a distance .

Thanks, that's true, but in the event the poster can be viewed up close to see the extreme detail (ideally the case), I wanted that to be an option.
