Photoshop CS5 doesn't import mp4 files?

Hi everyone,

I have tried literally everything but I'm really lost right now. Photoshop won't import mp4 or any other file, it only accepts avi container files.

It's a pain to convert every single file to avi if I want to use Import > Video frames to layers.

I have already installed Quicktime Pro but that doesn't seem to work.

Can somebody please help me?

Photoshop should be able to open anything that QuickTime can read, because we're using QuickTime to parse the video files.

I know Photoshop should be able to import all the Quicktime readable files, but somehow on my Mac it doesn't.

Here's an example:

see that I can't click on the .mp4 file? It's greyed out. That video plays perfectly fine in QuickTime.

Could it be choking on the "&" in the filename?

Could it open the file if you simply rename it from mp4 to m4v, mov, or avi?

What codecs are used in the mp4 file?

Looks like it might have a semicolon in the name too.

I'm having the same problem. When I try to open a mp4 it just shows them at a lighter opacity than the other files and I can't open them.

I was able to open them when I had the trial version, but since I installed my own copy it wont let me.

Do you have Photoshop CS5 or CS5 Extended? Video layers are only supported in Extended.

Though Adobe Photoshop CS6/CS5/CS4 was announced to be compatibility with MP4, people still have problems in importing MP4 to Photoshop CS6/CS5/CS4. MP4 file format is a container format which defines the storage of MPEG-4 audio, scenes and multimedia content using the ISO Base Media File Format, the MP4 file may also contain any number of audio, video, and even subtitle streams. So it is impossible for the MP4 file to determine the type of streams in an MPEG-4 file based on its filename extension alone. If you have problem of importing MP4 to Photoshop CS5/CS4/CS3 on Windows or on Mac, it is better to convert MP4 to Photoshop CS6/CS5/CS4 supported video format MPEG-4.
