Photoshop freezes my iMac

Whenever I attempt to open PS I get "verifying adobe photoshop 2023.app" and my whole imac freezes. Spinning beach ball everywhere including if I move mouse to Apple icon top left. Tried opening PS from Bridge, from Finder and even while holding Cmd+opt+shift. I have to force shutdown of my whole iMac. Ventura current update, 32GB memory. I am using PS and Bridge 2023 each and they have the latest update according to CC.

Hi @peregrineguy, if you can't launch Photoshop to give us your system info from the 25.0 Release (it's under Help > System Info) please revert to one of the last versions where you were stable. Do that from your Creative Cloud Desktop app. Once you get back into Photoshop, copy your System Info here, and we'll take a look to see if we can figure out what's going on.

After over an hour of "verifying..." PS did finally open. Every action I took (in PS and elsewhere) took about 2 minutes and then my Mac automatically restarted itself. Repeated the process--with very long waits--and finally got this following. (it is 14 pages in word so the paste here seems short).

It's okay, your System Info came through just fine. The only thing I see that could be problematic is your AMD Radeon Pro 580 OpenGL Engine. There are no current driver updates for it. Other users have reported problems with it as well. Looks like it came out circa 2017. It's possible that six years later, it's not keeping up with all the new features in the Photoshop 25.0 Release. If you are stable on 24.7.1 or older, perhaps stay there until you have time to try some other Preferences setting solutions or other adjustments. Others may come along with more suggestions for you, too.

How can I go back to an earlier version of v24? Can I do that via Time Machine?

I'm not sure if that can happen with Time Machine or not. How far back do you have versions installed? From your System Info, you are running 24.7.1. Is that version not working for you either? Do you need to go back earlier than that? Did you look in your Creative Cloud Desktop app (see my screenshot above) to see if there are older versions? If there aren't any, you can contact Adobe support through chat and ask them to assist you with reinstalling a previous version of Photoshop due to current system incompatibility. If you can be specific as to what version worked, that would help them set you up faster. Once that's done, be sure to turn off automatic updates!

I believe you are correct about the age of my iMac and/or its components as the underlying cause of my problem. THANK YOU. I have copied my source files to a MacBook Pro, recent vintage, and did a quick test on them with PS which did go well. I will be trading in the iMac for something else. The iMac during this time has exhibite some other bad behavor. Possibly the challenge of the current version of PS (I was not having problems 2 weeks ago) and the age of the iMac is what has brought it down.
